Principal Software Engineer, Platform

PermitFlow•New York, NY
•$250,000 - $300,000•Hybrid

About The Position

PermitFlow is an applied AI company helping construction businesses navigate permitting, licensing, inspections, and project closeouts. The Principal Software Engineer will own the evolution of the company’s architecture and platform, making them effective for both people and AI agents. The role spans infrastructure, shared services, and product code, with the expectation of working as a product engineer anywhere in the stack when needed. It reports directly to the VP of Engineering. The role focuses on increasing organizational output while maintaining and improving quality. The successful candidate will establish architecture and platform foundations that enable teams and agents to work effectively, safely, and independently, and will lead changes to those foundations as models and tools evolve.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, including experience setting technical direction across multiple teams.
  • Experience owning the architecture of a large, multi-team codebase, setting module boundaries and patterns, and leading migrations that changed how an organization works.
  • Experience with monorepo tooling such as Nx, Turborepo, Bazel, or similar.
  • Strong platform and infrastructure expertise, including cloud infrastructure, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and observability.
  • Experience running production services through real incidents.
  • Ability and willingness to work across the stack as a product engineer, from data model to UI.
  • Current agent-first software development practice, with a large share of shipped code produced by AI coding agents and specific experience-based views on their limitations and how codebase structure addresses them.
  • Current knowledge of the agentic software engineering stack, including context engineering, agent instructions and skills, MCP, sandboxed execution, and evaluating coding-agent output.
  • Ability to influence through demonstrated judgment, working code, and clear writing rather than title or mandate.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture of the codebase, including setting patterns, module boundaries, and domain abstractions across the monorepo, and leading refactors and migrations.
  • Structure the monorepo’s packages, ownership, build graph, and conventions so agents can find context, make scoped changes, and verify their work.
  • Build and own shared services, infrastructure, and paved paths, including data access, background jobs, environments, and observability.
  • Define and evolve the agentic software development lifecycle, including how work moves from ticket to production and the defaults used across teams.
  • Build AI-assisted code review, test generation, and CI gates to maintain merge confidence as pull request volume grows; determine where human review is required.
  • Deploy background agents to handle well-scoped tickets, flaky-test triage, dependency upgrades, large migrations, and draft fixes based on incidents and error reports.
  • Work across the product stack, from data models to user interfaces, when doing so is the fastest way to move work forward.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity in a high-growth company.
  • 100% company-paid employee medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Healthcare FSA.
  • 401(k) savings plan.
  • Unlimited PTO and paid family leave.
  • Home office and equipment stipend.
  • Daily in-office lunch and dinner.
  • Commuter benefits for pre-tax transit and parking.
