Principal Software Engineer, AI & Business Platforms

UMH•Corona, CA
•$175,000 - $215,000•Hybrid

About The Position

United Material Handling (UMH) is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to take technical ownership of UMH-os, the company’s internal operating system, and UMH Connect, its distributor partner portal. The platforms are built on existing Azure infrastructure, single sign-on, CI/CD, a design system, an approved application catalog spanning ten departments, and a written blueprint. The engineer will work directly with the CEO, assess and strengthen the existing codebase, ship production changes, and build AI agents that produce and check proposals for distributors. The role requires close collaboration with business teams to understand their workflows, document requirements in plain English, and obtain stakeholder sign-off before implementation. The engineer will own production change review and deployment, guide engineering standards and outside development partners, and may recruit and lead a small nearshore engineering team. The work includes developing Order Management and other operational capabilities, connecting business tools and customer activity to Salesforce, launching UMH Connect with pilot distributors, and planning the next stage of the ERP roadmap. The position is full-time and hybrid, based in Corona, California, with two to three days per week onsite and the remainder remote. Occasional visits to the Moreno Valley distribution center are part of the role; travel beyond that is limited to up to 10 percent.

  • Expertise in TypeScript, React, and Node.js.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, including App Service, Azure SQL, and Entra ID, and GitHub Actions CI/CD.
  • Relational data modeling and SQL experience for operational workflows.
  • Production experience shipping LLM agents or tool-calling features, using Claude, Azure OpenAI, or AI Foundry, and MCP or similar.
  • Experience integrating Salesforce, Microsoft Graph, and an ERP.
  • Daily use of AI coding assistants such as Claude Code.
  • Application security fundamentals, including securing an external portal.
  • Experience as one of a small number of engineers owning a platform end to end.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Salesforce platform development experience.
  • Manufacturing, distribution, or logistics experience.
  • Experience leading remote or nearshore engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Learn UMH’s business workflows by touring the Corona headquarters and Moreno Valley distribution center and working with Sales Operations, Supply Chain, Operations, and Finance.
  • Review the UMH-os codebase, standards, and blueprint, and provide a written assessment of what to strengthen first.
  • Ship a production change within the first two weeks and take ownership of the deployment pipeline.
  • Establish a clear division of responsibilities with the IT Administrator, who owns accounts, devices, and user support.
  • Review and approve every change to UMH-os and UMH Connect before production, including work produced by AI tools and outside partners.
  • Take a major new application, starting with Order Management, from specification through daily use.
  • Improve engineering standards so AI-written code is consistent.
  • Serve as the technical owner of outside development partners.
  • Run a shared agent runtime for both platforms, with evaluation, logging, and guardrails.
  • Launch UMH Connect with pilot distributors, including a proposal agent and proposal check agent.
  • Connect Fellow, Dialpad, and Microsoft 365 activity to Salesforce so customer records stay current automatically.
  • Recruit and lead a small nearshore engineering team if the work calls for it.
  • Bring order management into UMH-os, with job costing, work in progress (WIP), and field time capture under way.
  • Document the platform so a new engineer can ship within two weeks of joining.
  • Plan the next stage of the ERP roadmap with the CEO.
  • Work with business stakeholders to understand workflows, document requirements, and obtain sign-off before building.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to architect the operating system of a growing company across orders, projects, supply chain, finance approvals, hiring, budgeting, and a partner portal.
  • Opportunity to work on AI connected to a live CRM, ERP, and CPQ on a modern stack, with leadership that uses and invests in these tools.
  • Direct access to the CEO, decisions made in days rather than quarters, and work visible across the company.
  • Growth path to leading a small team and the platform as it scales.
