About The Position
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving technical excellence across multiple teams. This role involves architecting cloud-native, distributed systems with AI/ML integration, ensuring high availability and performance. You will provide strategic technical guidance, mentor engineers, and collaborate with stakeholders to translate complex business needs into effective solutions. By fostering innovation and continuous improvement, you will advance Walmart’s engineering vision and contribute to the development of intelligent software systems that serve millions of customers and associates. The Associate AI Platform team develops the next generation of intelligent experiences for Walmart associates by building an enterprise-scale AI platform that enhances productivity, decision-making, and access to knowledge. Operating at the intersection of AI, distributed systems, developer platforms, and product engineering, we address complex challenges in agent orchestration, tool execution, personalization, and responsible AI. The systems serve over two million associates across stores, clubs, campuses, and international markets. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will influence the architecture and technical direction of a platform redefining AI usage within one of the world’s largest enterprises.
Requirements
- Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- Option 2: 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- Extensive experience leading platform engineering initiatives, delivering scalable, cloud-native architectures and reusable tooling.
- Proven expertise in designing and implementing distributed systems optimized for real-time data processing and AI/ML integration.
- Strong proficiency in software development lifecycle management, including CI/CD pipelines, testing, monitoring, and incident response.
- Demonstrated ability to apply model-driven design and leverage AI agents for enhanced software solutions.
- Skilled in mentoring engineering teams and influencing architectural decisions to promote maintainability and interoperability.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills with cross-functional stakeholders to define technical requirements and measure success.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and adapting to evolving technologies and business needs.
Nice To Haves
- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
- Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
