Principal Scientist, Statistical Genetics

Bristol Myers Squibb•Needham, MA
•$166,770 - $202,086

About The Position

Bristol Myers Squibb is seeking a statistical geneticist to coordinate and lead implementation of genetics approaches for cardiovascular diseases using large-scale human genetic data. The role is part of Informatics & Predictive Sciences, a globally distributed group conducting computational research for discovery and early development. A key focus is using statistical genetics methods and integrated human genetic, functional, and clinical data to identify and validate drug target candidates with strong causal human biology aligned with company strategy for cardiovascular diseases. Methods may include GWAS, fine-mapping, colocalization, Mendelian randomization, rare variant association tests, variant effect prediction, and polygenic modeling. The work informs therapeutic hypotheses, including directionality, efficacy, safety, and indication selection, and requires communicating findings at cross-functional target discovery meetings. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to human genomics research, support disease-area teams in leveraging genetics, collaborate with the scientific community through pre-competitive collaborations such as FinnGen, UK Biobank, and the Alliance for Genomic Discovery, and publish and present scientific work. The position is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8 or more years of academic or industry experience, or a master’s degree with 6 or more years of academic or industry experience, or a PhD with 4 or more years of academic or industry experience.
  • Deep scientific expertise applying statistical genetic methods for causal inference.
  • Advanced hands-on knowledge of at least one high-level programming language, such as R or Python.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance multidisciplinary team projects.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in statistical genetics, cardiovascular genetics, or a related computational or quantitative discipline, with 4 or more years of relevant postdoctoral research and/or industry experience.
  • Experience applying genetics to drug discovery or other healthcare-related applications.
  • Familiarity with functional genomics.

Responsibilities

  • Design and perform cross-biobank analyses to identify human genetic risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, including GWAS meta-analysis and rare variant burden tests.
  • Design and perform integrative analyses to infer causal mechanisms driving disease using human genetics and other data types, such as Mendelian randomization with proteomics and single-cell eQTLs.
  • Leverage disease-specific, multimodal datasets derived from disease-focused consortia.
  • Coordinate with research stakeholders to nominate, evaluate, and advance novel drug targets.
  • Communicate findings and recommend follow-up actions in one-to-one discussions, seminars, project meetings, and external publications.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefit plans, including wellbeing support, retirement and financial protection benefits, and medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance offerings, subject to plan terms and eligibility.
  • U.S.-based exempt employees are eligible for Flexible Time Off without a set accrual limit, subject to manager approval, and 11 paid company holidays each year.
  • Eligible employees may have access to paid sick leave, up to two paid volunteer days per year, summer hours flexibility, and leaves of absence for medical, personal, parental, caregiver, bereavement, or military needs.
  • Eligible employees enjoy an annual Global Shutdown between Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • Non-exempt employees, RayzeBio employees, and employees located in Puerto Rico receive 160 hours of paid vacation annually for new hires, subject to manager approval, 11 paid company holidays, and 3 optional holidays.
