About The Position

The Department of Immunology Discovery at Genentech is seeking a Principal Scientist, Lab Head, to lead a research group focused on designing next-generation cell therapies for autoimmune diseases. The role involves leading a research team, integrating cross-functional efforts to identify new targets and therapeutic hypotheses, and advancing therapeutics from preclinical studies into early clinical development. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of cellular immunology principles and pathways relevant to autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Strong communication skills are essential for collaboration with diverse departments including computational biology, proteomics and tissue genomics, drug development, early clinical development, and translational medicine. Key responsibilities include managing a research team, generating high-quality research to advance understanding of autoimmune disease, and contributing to novel pipeline projects. The candidate may also evaluate external business development opportunities to enhance the cell therapy pipeline.

Requirements

  • PhD and postdoctoral training in Immunology, Cell Biology or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years post-PhD experience with a record of high-impact publications (preprints considered), patents, and/or a proven track record advancing therapeutic candidates from pipeline entry to early clinical development
  • Demonstrated expertise in cellular immunology and a deep understanding of pathways and immune cell types that contribute to autoimmune disease
  • Outstanding leadership and a collaborative spirit, with a proven track record of working with multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to multidisciplinary audiences
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills, a commitment to rigorous experimental design and creative problem-solving, and a demonstrated ability to use data-driven insights to guide scientific decisions

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in both B cell and T cell biology
  • Experience engineering, modifying, and functionally evaluating human immune cells
  • Experience working with mouse models, including humanized models
