About The Position

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is seeking a Principal Scientist, Data Science to join the R&D Data Science organization. This role will serve as a hands-on technical individual contributor responsible for designing, building, validating, and delivering applied AI/ML and statistical modeling solutions to support Drug Product Development & Supply (DPDS), with a primary focus on Therapeutics Development & Supply (TDS). The individual will collaborate with various teams including Process Development, CMC, Clinical Supply, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, and Digital/Data Science to create practical, high-impact data science and machine learning models. These models will support core TDS responsibilities across CMC development, pharmaceutical product development, dossier preparation, technical development, and clinical supply. The ideal candidate should possess strong quantitative skills, a background in CMC development, proficiency with data science tools, and a proven track record of delivering impactful analytical solutions.

Requirements

  • 3–5+ years of relevant experience in applied data science, machine learning, statistical modeling, AI/ML solution development, scientific computing, or related quantitative disciplines, preferably in a complex R&D, pharmaceutical development, manufacturing, supply chain, healthcare, or technical operations environment.
  • Strong Python programming skills and demonstrated use of modern analytical development practices, including version control, testing, documentation, reproducibility, and code review.
  • Strong applied problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate ambiguous scientific, technical, or business questions into rigorous quantitative solutions.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to explain model assumptions, outputs, uncertainty, and implications to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Use modern development environments, including AI-assisted coding tools where appropriate, to accelerate delivery while maintaining quality, transparency, and maintainability.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Operations Research, Chemistry, Physics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or another related quantitative or scientific discipline.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical product development, CMC development, process development, analytical development, manufacturing, regulatory dossier preparation, clinical supply, or related life sciences environments.
  • Familiarity with regulated (GxP) or standards-driven environments and the implications of data quality, traceability, reproducibility, documentation, and model governance for applied data science work.
  • Exposure to developing and/or deploying agent-based AI solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior hands-on individual contributor responsible for personally designing, coding, testing, validating, and refining applied AI/ML models for high-value TDS use cases.
  • Translate complex scientific and business questions into tractable modeling problems, selecting fit-for-purpose methods based on the data, decision context, assumptions, and expected business impact.
  • Conduct rigorous exploratory analysis, feature engineering, diagnostics, error analysis, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty assessment to ensure models are credible, robust, and actionable.
  • Develop robust, reusable analytical workflows and modeling assets using Python and modern data science tooling, including cloud-based services.
  • Apply software engineering best practices, including version control, modular code design, testing, documentation, reproducibility, and code review.
  • Use modern development environments, including AI-assisted coding tools where appropriate, to accelerate delivery while maintaining quality, transparency, and maintainability.
  • Engage with scientific, technical, and operations stakeholders to understand requirements, design data and AI/ML solutions, and drive adoption.
  • Support multiple concurrent projects, managing priorities and delivering maximum business value across the TDS network.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior team members, consultants, post-doctoral researchers, or collaborators while remaining an active hands-on contributor accountable for measurable business impact.
