Principal R&D Engineer

MedtronicPlymouth, MN
Hybrid

About The Position

This Early-Stage Principal R&D Engineer will contribute to the growth of the Peripheral Vascular Health technology portfolio by driving front end innovation for percutaneous venous and arterial thrombectomy systems, with an emphasis on thrombectomy technologies. This role will be responsible for concept development, feasibility assessment, and prototype development of catheter based thrombectomy technologies intended for arterial and venous applications. The position involves translating clinical and procedural insights into engineering concepts, investigating feasibility of novel thrombectomy mechanisms, and supporting the transition of early device concepts into formal development programs. This role offers a flexible work style that may include a combination of onsite and remote work. Future adjustments could include transitioning to full-time onsite.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of medical device R&D experience
  • Direct experience developing or supporting venous and/or arterial thrombectomy technologies
  • Experience with catheter‑based interventional device design
  • CAD experience (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo)
  • Hands‑on experience with rapid prototyping and benchtop feasibility testing
  • Working knowledge of peripheral arterial and venous anatomy and procedural workflows
  • Experience working in cross‑functional R&D teams
  • Ability to operate effectively in early‑stage, ambiguous development environments
  • For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Nice To Haves

  • MS or PhD in engineering or related discipline
  • Track record of invention disclosures and/or scientific publications
  • Experience designing blood‑contacting devices with consideration for hemolysis and thrombogenicity
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485, FDA design controls, and ISO 14971 risk management
  • Startup or early‑phase product development experience

Responsibilities

  • Support Peripheral Vascular Health Research & Technology and product development teams by leading early‑stage engineering activities for venous and arterial thrombectomy devices
  • Translate unmet clinical needs from arterial and venous thrombectomy procedures (e.g., PAD, DVT, PE) into design inputs and early system requirements
  • Generate, evaluate, and iterate device concepts
  • Design and develop early prototypes of catheter‑based thrombectomy systems, including aspiration devices, mechanical thrombectomy mechanisms, and large‑bore access platforms
  • Conduct engineering analyses and trade studies related to catheter performance, flow paths, structural integrity, and deliverability
  • Plan, execute, and document benchtop feasibility testing in flow loops and representative anatomical models and/or preclinical evaluation
  • Analyze test data and rapidly iterate designs to improve performance and usability
  • Partner with clinical, regulatory, quality, and marketing stakeholders to ensure early concepts align with procedural workflows and development expectations
  • Support early simulated‑use, cadaver, or preclinical evaluations as applicable
  • Prepare and present design concepts, feasibility data, and technical recommendations at internal design reviews
  • Document early‑stage design activities in accordance with design control requirements
  • Submit invention disclosures and assist with intellectual property development
  • Support technical evaluations, technology due diligence, and go / no‑go assessments with objective engineering data
