About The Position

This role will be responsible for Amtrak's safety and reliability by working with rolling stock equipment (RSE) and the PTC Engineering Services group, acting as the SME for the processes to implement and enhance the quality and reliability of Positive Train Control (PTC). Focus on I-ETMS and ACSES systems in use across the Amtrak system, including ITCM industry standards. The Principal Project Manager-PTC will report to the PTC Director working in parallel with RSE, Digital Technology (BOS), Transportation, IMCS, and Mechanical. This position will collaborate to solve advanced technical problems pertaining to PTC, enhance interoperability, drive robust efforts towards innovation for Amtrak, our state rolling stock, our tenants, as well as with our host railroad partners. This will be accomplished primarily through communication with stakeholders both internally and externally to achieve business objectives.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree required OR equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
7 years of relevant experience required
5+ years experience with Interoperable Train Control Messaging (ITCM)
5+ years experience reviewing and analyzing I-ETMS logs from wayside, locomotive and back-office applications.
220 Mhz. Radio experience, including ITCR.
Wayside Interface Unit (WIU) experience.
Wayside Message Server (WMS) experience.
Proficient in ethernet-based network and RF/cellular communications systems.
Knowledgeable in areas of North American railway safety and regulatory practices including, but not limited to, AAR and FRA standards and rules.
Knowledge of train control regulations, signal rules, operating rules related to train operations, and physical features of the right of way.
Experience with I-ETMS, ACSES, Wi-Tronix, and Wabtec one collecting/reading downloads, reading logs and interpreting them for executive level investigations, challenges, and unusual events.
Basic computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft computer software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and Project.
Ability to assist in development of Mechanical procedures, Modifications, SMP’s and Maintenance Bulletins and Alerts.

Nice To Haves

9+ years of relevant experience preferred
Master’s Degree or equivalent.
Working knowledge of the 49CFR236 and basic qualifications.
Working knowledge of AAR Standards for Interoperable Train Control (ITC).
7+ years of engineering experience and minimum of 5 years with PTC systems.

Responsibilities

Provides expert technical guidance to the Mechanical team across the system, resolving major PTC locomotive-related troubleshooting.
Will be the SME on BOS messaging working with DT, Engineering Services, and vendor support to resolve PTC anomalies that are not onboard defects.
Level two investigation of all communication paths varying between GPS, 220 radios, wayside, BOS, and cellular equipment.
Leads on technical specifications and procedures for train control systems for both Amtrak and state rolling stock equipment.
Reviews documentation for component upgrades, updates and replacements, including qualifying vendors and products with engineering documentation and drawing reviews as necessary. They will be directly involved with any vendor on PTC enhancements pertaining to software and hardware as well as BOS interoperability.
Responsible for assisting mechanical department with engineering work practices or vendor management to increase equipment reliability and to modify the maintenance plans in asset management systems that go beyond routine diagnostic work and that are PTC centric.
Review and approve as the SME with Fleet Directors and Project Management Office to provide design and procedure improvements related to equipment problems, which are typically design flaws, retrofit and field modifications, and maintenance shortcomings.
Participate in field tests, safety inspections, FRA audits, for both Amtrak and state rolling stock equipment for PTC.
Supports, improves, and audits equipment onboard software policies, BOS and Wayside policies, related to train control systems.
Participates in industry advisory and regulatory boards as necessary.
