About The Position

Simmonds Precision is seeking a Principal Project Engineer to join our Motion Controls engineering team. In this role, you will lead test equipment design and development activities to support the development of advanced actuation systems for aerospace and defense applications. This position requires expertise in mechanical design, with strong preference for experience in aerospace design and development. The ideal candidate will serve as a technical leader, driving engineering excellence across multidisciplinary teams and contributing across the full product lifecycle. This role will be on-site and located in Vergennes, VT.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years’ experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with technical leadership for design and development activities
  • Experience with project management tools (schedules, action tracking, staffing forecasts, critical path analysis, etc.)
  • Experience with risk and opportunity management

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing motor-driven or actuation systems (e.g., electromechanical actuators, gear systems, precision mechanisms)
  • Hands-on experience in aerospace or defense product development, including integration of electromechanical systems
  • Experience managing cost and schedule for engineering scope (e.g., Earned Value Management exposure)
  • Experience supporting and presenting at design reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR)
  • Experience developing proposals, including Basis of Estimates (BOEs) and technical volume contributions

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of test equipment for motor-driven actuation systems, including equipment developed in-house and subcontracted
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Systems, Electrical, Software, Project Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to develop and execute integrated program plans
  • Provide engineering leadership for proposals, design reviews, and customer/supplier engagements; ensure designs meet all technical, cost, and schedule requirements
  • Drive project execution using integrated scheduling, earned value management, and risk and opportunity management.
  • Coordinate project tasks with the various functional organizations to ensure alignment with overall project commitments.
  • Track team’s cost and schedule performance to plan, and present to Simmonds leadership and customers.
  • Analyze, identify, and address technical or execution problems; recommend and implement solutions to ensure the successful completion of project(s).
  • Develop bids based on customer proposal requests
  • Convert bids into project execution plans (baselined schedule, risk and opportunity matrix, etc.).
