Principal Product Manager

MicrosoftRedmond, WA

About The Position

We are seeking a Product Manager with experience using AI developer tools, shipping products in fast-moving spaces, and transforming ambiguity into functional solutions. This role involves daily use of the platform and building for engineers who provide direct, immediate feedback. The AI team is part of ES365 (Microsoft 365 Engineering Systems), responsible for the Agentic Engineering platform adopted across Microsoft. ES365 manages tools and systems for thousands of Microsoft developers, covering source control, build, validation, and deployment automation. The team rapidly tests, ships, and scales new AI workflows across real engineering teams. The ES365 AI team develops the agentic platform, including the core orchestration layer, developer-facing tools, a plugin marketplace, and enterprise governance. Customers include developers and codebase owners, with a tight feedback loop for rapid iteration. Past workstreams include AI-assisted codebase refactoring, automated package integrations, architectural Q&A over codebases, human-in-the-loop code changes, and enterprise governance for AI tooling. This early-stage role offers the opportunity to shape core product decisions and reach tens of thousands of users quickly. The position will define product vision and strategy for the platform, including agent functionality and developer discovery/usage. Key responsibilities include owning metrics that demonstrate AI's impact on developer workflows, prototyping with AI tools, building conviction through experimentation, and shipping alongside senior engineers. Potential areas of focus include defining end-to-end agent experiences for code changes, redesigning developer onboarding, setting strategy for scaling AI-assisted workflows, and measuring improvements in engineering throughput. The role is ideal for individuals excited about AI's potential and shaping AI-powered developer efficiency at Microsoft.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 10+ years experience in product/service/program management or software development. OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven experience as a Product Manager shipping developer tools, platforms, or infrastructure products end-to-end.
  • A builder mindset. You use AI tools to prototype workflows, validate product ideas, or directly shape what got built, not just to draft documents faster.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-powered developer tooling and coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Copilot Workspace, Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, ChatGPT, Cursor, or similar.
  • A clear point of view on what great looks like and a strong conviction on how AI is transforming the software development experience, gained through hands-on work.
  • Turns ambiguous, fast-changing problem spaces into clear strategy, crisp requirements, and product roadmaps.
  • Track record of driving product adoption at scale. You know how to move from early adopters to broad rollout and can point to the metrics that prove it.
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills. You work effectively across engineering, design, data science, and leadership stakeholders.
  • Comfort leading in ambiguous, fast-moving problem spaces where best practices are still being established.

Responsibilities

  • Own product strategy, vision, and roadmap for a defined area of Microsoft's agentic platform, and drive it end-to-end from discovery through launch, adoption, and iteration.
  • Use AI tools in your daily work, prototype product concepts yourself, and stay current on the fast-moving landscape of AI developer tools and agentic systems. Bring that depth to every product decision.
  • Demonstrate resiliency to experiment and try multiple AI-driven product approaches that may not work, because no one has tried them before.
  • Define how developers discover, adopt, and get value from the platform and its ecosystem of agents and plugins, whether that means onboarding, governance, developer experience, or scaling adoption across new engineering orgs.
  • Lead with judgment, verify with data. Have a point of view on what to build, then use metrics like adoption, engagement, and productivity impact to validate it. Make the case to leadership with evidence and a clear view of what is or isn't working.
  • Work closely with engineering managers, principal engineers, and technical leads to scope work, make trade-offs, and make sure the team is building the right things.
  • Drive cross-team roadmap alignment and decision-making with partner teams across Microsoft working on AI, developer tooling, and engineering systems, including GitHub, DevDiv, and internal platform teams.
  • Stay close to your customers. Run feedback loops with developers, pull insights from telemetry and direct conversations, and make sure the product keeps up with real needs.
  • Help create a team environment with high trust, direct feedback, and room for people to do their best work.

Benefits

  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
