Principal Product Manager - M365 Messaging

MicrosoftRedmond, WA
$142,800 - $274,800

About The Position

The Microsoft 365 Messaging team builds and operates the trusted, secure, intelligent, and scalable messaging and notification platform that powers Copilot across Microsoft 365. We are the connective tissue behind Copilot’s conversations and notifications — the platform that lets Copilot connect, converse, remember, notify, and continue the thread across Microsoft 365 Enterprise and Consumer Copilot, Microsoft Teams, Outlook and beyond. We operate at extraordinary scale, and Copilot is our fastest-growing workload as agentic, multi-step AI experiences become first-class. As a Principal Product Manager on the team, you will own the strategy and charter to establish the conversation store as the platform of choice for all Copilot scenarios — and to extend that platform into the connected areas of Notifications and Tasks. You will set the multi-year vision for how Copilot and agents persist, load, and reason over conversations, then drive its execution across one of the largest distributed systems at Microsoft. This is a high-influence, high-ownership role for a builder who can operate from first-principles strategy down to schema-level technical tradeoffs, at the center of Microsoft’s AI strategy. Our mission is to make Copilot the most trusted, effective communicator in the enterprise: reaching users wherever they are, remembering every conversation, and acting as a true partner to get work done. Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years experience in product/service/program management or software development OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 12+ years experience in product/service/program management or software development OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years experience taking a product, feature, or experience to market (e.g., design, addressing product market fit, and launch, internal tool/framework).
  • 6+ years experience improving product metrics for a product, feature, or experience in a market (e.g., growing customer base, expanding customer usage, avoiding customer churn).
  • 6+ years experience disrupting a market for a product, feature, or experience (e.g., competitive disruption, taking the place of an established competing product).
  • Demonstrated ownership of a platform or infrastructure-adjacent product at scale, including setting strategy that multiple partner teams adopted.
  • Track record of translating complex partner and customer requirements into durable, reusable platform capabilities — not one-off integrations.
  • Proven ability to drive cross-organizational technical strategy and alignment, influencing without authority across engineering and product teams.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to frame architectural tradeoffs for both engineers and executives
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems — messaging, storage, pub/sub, or notification platforms (e.g., distributed NoSQL databases, event delivery pipelines).
  • Familiarity with AI / Copilot orchestration, agentic workflows, or large language model conversation modeling (e.g., intermediate agent outputs, reasoning traces, multi-agent scenarios).
  • Experience evaluating and driving non-functional requirements such as reliability, latency, auditability, compliance, and cost at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify patterns across partner implementations and converge them onto shared platform standards and schemas.
  • Experience leading multi-team, multi-quarter initiatives with cross-organizational dependencies and phased migration plans.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving, ambiguous space where feature scope and partner priorities evolve in parallel across multiple organizations.
  • Willingness to partner across global engineering and product teams and time zones, with periodic travel for partner and leadership reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Own the platform vision and roadmap for the conversation store for Copilot and agents — defining the durable primitives (conversations, threads, intermediate agent outputs, reasoning traces, tasks, notifications) that all Copilot scenarios build on.
  • Drive conversation-store convergence toward a unified schema: separate intermediate agent outputs and reasoning traces to improve conversation loading and unlock client-side pagination, align storage and schema, and converge real-time transport (multi-endpoint presence, streaming) across surfaces.
  • Lead the Copilot Notifications charter — evolve the extensible, end-to-end notification pipeline, prioritize notifications across products to reduce overload, and give users control through notification settings that re-engage them across mobile, email, and in-app.
  • Scale the Tasks platform — mature first-class task representation across Copilot surfaces and Teams; enable a unified task hub as the control tower for AI work; and evolve toward an agent-to-agent (A2A) task-compatible interface.
  • Champion enterprise trust — own compliance, auditability, data lifecycle, and large-message support, preventing data leakage and unintended duplication as conversations grow richer.
  • Set the bar on operational health — drive analytics for volume, latency, and cost, turning baseline measurement into actionable dashboards and competitive benchmarks that inform platform goals.
  • Lead cross-organization alignment and adoption — establish a clear engagement and prioritization model with partner teams, and guide them toward reusable platform capabilities rather than parallel one-off stores.
  • Represent the platform in leadership reviews — communicate architectural decisions, sequencing, risks, and delivery implications to executives and partners, and build alignment across teams that do not report to you.
