Principal Power Electronics Engineer

Stormentum Inc•Austin, TX

About The Position

As a Principal Power Electronics Engineer at Stormentum, you will lead hardware design and development for next-generation modular power conversion technology serving applications including hyperscale data centers, microgrids, and bidirectional EV charging. You will own high-power, high-voltage conversion-stage design for systems operating at 480 VAC three-phase and 800–1000 VDC, and guide engineering decisions on topology selection, magnetics, power-stage architecture, schematics, PCB layout, component selection, and hardware optimization. You will take converter designs from concept and prototype validation through qualification and high-volume production, while setting technical direction and mentoring engineers.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar field; a PhD is a plus.
  • Extensive experience in end-to-end power electronics product development from concept through commercialization.
  • Knowledge of hardware design and controls for MMC and CHB power electronics topologies.
  • At least 10 years of experience designing and delivering high-voltage, high-power power electronics converters, including at least two full project cycles bringing distinct products to market.
  • Deep hands-on experience with wide-bandgap semiconductor devices (SiC, GaN), including personal ownership of schematic and PCB design.
  • Experience with circuit modeling, simulation, and PCB design tools, including SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Altium Designer, and HIL platforms such as Typhoon HIL, OPAL-RT, or dSPACE.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, electronic loads, and grid simulators.
  • Strong working knowledge of grid-interconnection and energy-storage standards relevant to power conversion hardware, including UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, and UL 9540, and ability to design to those standards; prior ownership of completed certification is not required.
  • Experience with processes similar to those outlined in UL 1998, UL 991, and IEC 61508.
  • Experience designing to IEC 62477-1, including insulation coordination, creepage, and clearance for high-voltage hardware.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) or solid-state transformers.
  • Direct experience owning a product through UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, or UL 9540 certification end-to-end, including engagement with a third-party certification lab.
  • Familiarity with UL 62368-1, UL 1973, and NFPA 855.
  • Familiarity with international grid standards, including CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 and EN 50549.
  • Experience in volume manufacturing environments, including design for cost optimization, yield improvement, and supplier engagement.
  • Background in grid-tied inverter systems, energy storage, utility-scale power conversion, or data center power systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the selection, design, and development of power conversion stages for Stormentum's Modular Power Electronics Conversion platform, including topology selection, magnetics, and power-stage architecture.
  • Own schematic capture for high-power, high-voltage converter hardware and provide technical direction and review for PCB layout.
  • Select and qualify power semiconductor devices, including SiC, GaN, and IGBT, and guide component trade-offs across efficiency, thermal performance, and cost.
  • Develop gate-drive and protection circuitry, including fault detection for Si, SiC, and GaN devices.
  • Lead EMI/EMC design and compliance activities for grid-connected power electronics hardware.
  • Own hardware development from concept through high-volume production, including design for manufacturability, design for test, and compliance testing.
  • Lead laboratory bring-up, testing, and debugging of prototype and production hardware.
  • Set technical direction for power electronics design decisions, lead design reviews, and mentor engineers across the hardware team.
  • Collaborate with controls, firmware, and systems architecture teams to ensure power-stage designs meet system performance and certification requirements.
