Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Principal Mechanical Engineer/Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer (Instrumentation Subsystem Design) to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Test & Evaluation organization. This role will be located in Melbourne, FL. Note: This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports. Due to the classified nature of the work being performed, this position does not offer any virtual or telecommute working options. This role can be filled at either level. As a Principal/Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer supporting the Instrumentation & Data team, you will be responsible for mechanical designs associated with flight test mechanical equipment, and integration onto test vehicles. These design activities will be associated with any of the following – cable interface assemblies, data acquisition hardware, and a variety of sensors design to measure stress, thermal, vibration, and linear/rotational displacement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline with 5 years of relevant experience; OR Master of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline with 3 years of relevant experience; OR PhD in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline with 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Your ability to transfer and maintain the final adjudicated U.S. government Secret clearance (must be in-scope or enrolled in Continuous Evaluation) and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the Company.
  • Must have Instrumentation experience.

  • Your ability to transfer and maintain the final adjudicated U.S. government Secret clearance (must be in-scope or enrolled in Continuous Evaluation) and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the Company.
  • Must have Instrumentation experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with deliverable air vehicle equipment installations, sheet metal, machined, and composite part design, test pod design, and OML/IML installations.
  • Advanced degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX or similar 3D modeling software and/or Siemens Capital Logic, HarneSys, or AutoCAD electrical design software.
  • Proficiency with Siemens Teamcenter or similar Product Lifecycle Management software.
  • Understanding of GD&T and MBE methods.
  • Ability to perform under minimal direction and independently determine and develop approach to solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the mechanical design life cycle from concept to system integration for flight test instrumentation hardware.
  • Facilitate cross IPT / discipline collaboration in the development of flight test instrumentation designs.
  • Procurement of hardware in support of mechanical designs.
  • Serve as the point of contact with vendors, manufacturers, and technician teams in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of flight test instrumentation equipment.
