About The Position

RTX, the world's largest aerospace and defense company with 185,000 employees, is seeking a highly motivated Principal Mechanical Engineer for its Strategic Defense Solution engineering organization in Richardson, TX. This role focuses on the development of electronics equipment enclosures and the integration of these items into rack-level assemblies. The designs will involve high-power components and radio frequency (RF) shielding, alongside challenging size, weight, and power dissipation requirements. The position offers ownership of budget and schedule, requiring coordination with a cross-functional team to ensure design quality and compliance throughout the product lifecycle. The selected candidate will be crucial in driving innovation in the design, development, and testing of electronic equipment for military communications missions. Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • Previous experience with commercial industry standards and/or military electronics packaging form factors, chassis design, and electromechanical applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Active possession of a U.S. government issued Secret or Top Secret clearance.
  • Practical experience in design and thermal management techniques for electronics packaging designs (enclosures and/or racks) with rigorous size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements.
  • Can apply and interpret Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
  • Knowledge of military standards such as MIL-STD-810, RTCA DO-160, and MIL-STD-1472.
  • Experience working with standard form factor industry standards such as EIA-310, ATR, or VITA.
  • Hands-on experience designing to meet and qualifying products for rugged environments such as those with electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic pulse (EMP), and nuclear exposure.
  • Familiar with thermal and structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA) best practices. (Ansys).

Responsibilities

  • Communicate technical topics and issues in a clear and concise manner to both technical peers as well as non-technical team members.
  • Conduct and provide constructive feedback during peer reviews.
  • Mentor and document knowledge to provide technical guidance to both members of own team and beyond.
  • Coordinate with drafting for the creation of drawings, along with providing review and redline of drawings for machined & sheet metal parts.
  • Interface with a cross functional team, such as Electrical and Systems engineering, to ensure requirements compliance throughout the entirety of a product’s lifecycle.
  • Work proactively with an integrated product team (IPT) to manage project scope and budget, as well as identify risks and opportunities.
  • Participate in and lead investigations into highly complex, open-ended tasks.
  • Search for and identify root cause of issues.
  • Create military compliant designs that incorporate custom machined/sheet metal parts with a selection of commercial off the shelf items as required.
  • Contribute to prototyping and testing activities to verify product requirements compliance.
