About The Position

Under general supervision, performs water safety services for swimming pool patrons, teaches swimming classes, and performs pool maintenance and other facility maintenance activities in adjoining areas. The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Requirements

Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
Considerable knowledge of the economic, educational, health and social problems of Native Americans.
Knowledge of lifesaving methods and procedures, including the application of first aid and lifesaving techniques.
Knowledge of swimming pool sanitary and chlorination systems.
Knowledge of the safety rules and regulations governing the conduct of people using the swimming pool and adjoining areas.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
Skill in performing advanced swimming techniques.
Skill in basic computer software applications.
Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
Skill in establishing and maintaining human relations such as courtesy, patience, leadership, and enthusiasm when interacting with recreational facility participants such as youth, the elderly, and the disabled.
Ability to exercise tact, firmness, and good judgment in enforcing safety rules and regulations.
Ability to prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies, and to take effective action when necessary.
Ability to apply lifesaving techniques and render first aid to all age groups.
Ability to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced swimming techniques to all ages.

Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and two years' work experience as a lifeguard and swimming instructor in a public pool environment, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
Must complete an approved lifeguard training program that includes CPR and AED (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation) certifications for the professional rescuer within six months of hire.
Must complete an approved water safety instructor program within six months of hire.
Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

Monitors and evaluates the safety of all activities in and around the swimming pool to prevent accidents.
Educates patrons on the required safety rules and regulations for pool safety, and cautions swimmers regarding unsafe conduct and safety hazards.
Recognizes activities that may lead to the dangers of drowning. Reacts immediately to distress calls and unusual behavior.
Administers standard techniques of resuscitation and other first aid activities as required.
Completes reports associated with all accidents and incidents.
Teaches beginning, intermediate, and advanced swimming lessons to all ages.
Schedules and plans swimming instruction programs; creates and maintains documents for class sign-ups; collects and keeps on file signed parental consent or waiver documents as appropriate; creates and distributes program information flyers.
Checks the proper maintenance of the pool equipment and pool sanitation.
Adjusts acid and chlorine chemical levels as required to maintain proper sanitation levels; removes debris from pool surface and vacuums pool regularly.
Orders supplies when needed.
Removes trash and debris around pool and adjoining areas; sweeps pool deck areas; cleans and sanitizes other adjoining areas, such as locker rooms, main restrooms, gym, and hallways.
Provides information and responds to questions related to the general operations of the swimming pool and adjoining areas.
May be required to answer phones at the front desk.
Participates in the planning and facilitation of other recreation activities during seasonal closure of pool operations.
Prepares estimates of cost and participation for each recreation event.
May be required to transport individuals to and from swimming pool and other recreation facilities.
Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.
