About The Position

BART’s Office of Infrastructure Delivery (OID) is seeking one (1) Principal Integration Engineer to join the Integration Engineering team as the Principal CBTC and Train Control Integration Lead. This position provides senior-level leadership for integrating BART’s modern Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system with the existing train control and related operational systems. The Principal Integration Engineer helps guide the full lifecycle of system integration—from early requirements and design through installation, testing, commissioning, and ongoing support. The role reviews and coordinates engineering work related to system designs, software and hardware configurations, technical drawings, specifications, and testing plans. A key responsibility is ensuring all systems—CBTC, conventional train control, vehicles, communications, wayside equipment, and the Operations Control Center—work together safely and reliably. This position also leads planning and coordination for a wide range of testing activities, including lab testing, field testing, and operational scenario testing. The Principal Integration Engineer supports commissioning and cutover activities and helps manage contingency and rollback plans when needed by providing technical leadership by troubleshooting problems, reviewing diagnostic data, and recommending long-term solutions that improve system reliability and performance. The Principal Integration Engineer works in close partnership with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Safety, Capital Delivery, and a variety of external consultants, contractors, and vendors. Key responsibilities include reviewing technical materials, managing system interfaces, identifying and addressing risks, and mentoring engineering team members. Some overnight, weekend, emergency, or on-call work may be required to support critical operational needs.

Requirements

  • Advanced technical knowledge of CBTC, conventional Train Control, railway signaling, interlockings, automatic train protection, automatic train operation, automatic train supervision, train detection, and associated communication systems.
  • Experience leading Train Control requirements, design, interface management, system integration, verification and validation, testing, commissioning, cutover, and in-service support.
  • Experience integrating CBTC with conventional Train Control, Rolling Stock, wayside equipment, communications, and Operations Control Center systems.
  • Experience investigating service-impacting incidents, performing root-cause analysis, interpreting diagnostic and performance data, and implementing sustainable corrective actions.
  • Proven ability to lead complex engineering work, coordinate multidisciplinary teams and external contractors, and resolve technical and operational issues in a safety-critical environment.
  • Strong technical-writing, communication, decision-making, stakeholder-coordination, and mentoring skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • The equivalent of five (5) years of electrical engineering, project management, or related experience.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of engineering design or construction contract management.
  • Knowledge of operations, services and activities of a comprehensive engineering design or construction program.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of project scheduling and management.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering systems.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques of construction contract management.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of engineering cost estimating.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of field measuring and testing.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of conducting facility or construction site inspection.
  • Knowledge of contract administration and management.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in engineering and construction projects.
  • Knowledge of current office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers.
  • Knowledge of specialized computer programs or systems utilized in construction engineering project design including CADD.

  • Knowledge of related Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
