Principal IC Design Engineer - Analog

Medtronic•Mounds View, MN
•$140,000 - $210,000•Onsite

About The Position

Medtronic is seeking a Principal IC Design Engineer - Analog to help lead development of next-generation Cardiac Rhythm Management devices. The role is part of an integrated Mixed-Signal ASIC team working on cardiac pacing, defibrillation, and monitoring therapies, with work spanning requirements definition, design exploration and implementation, simulation analysis, circuit evaluation and verification, physical design, lab testing and characterization, formal verification, and production test. The position is based in Mounds View, Minnesota, and requires working onsite at least four days per week. The engineer will specify, develop, and design analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits as an individual contributor, while coaching peers and less-experienced teammates. The role takes ownership of designs from concept through production release and involves cross-functional collaboration, design verification and characterization, layout direction and review, lab testing, and evaluation of EDA vendor offerings. Work contributes to implantable cardiac devices and is connected to patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field, plus at least 7 years of experience designing analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits; or an advanced degree plus at least 5 years of such experience; or a PhD plus at least 3 years of such experience.
  • Experience designing analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits at the applicable minimum level for the candidate's degree.
  • For baccalaureate degrees earned outside the United States, a degree satisfying the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
  • Experience using Cadence EDA analog and mixed-signal tools.
  • Thorough knowledge of analog and mixed-signal IC design methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience navigating the multi-variable tradeoffs typical of analog designs and ability to coach others on them.
  • Knowledge of ultra-low-power and subthreshold design methodologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of semiconductor materials, devices, and fabrication.
  • Experience with high-voltage and switch-mode power electronic devices and applications.
  • Expertise in Cadence analog design tools.
  • Expertise with quality and statistical methods.
  • Medical device experience.

Responsibilities

  • Specify, develop, and design analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, both as an individual contributor and by coaching peers and less-experienced teammates.
  • Define circuit innovation and design changes by gathering and reducing requirements from product, project, systems, test, research, and firmware engineering teams.
  • Foster communication and collaboration across the team and supporting departments.
  • Own designs throughout the development cycle, from concept through release to production.
  • Create schematics and verification simulations using Cadence EDA tools.
  • Develop and maintain simulation testbenches using Spectre and ADE to verify functionality and performance against specifications across process, voltage, and temperature variations.
  • Integrate test strategies into designs for highly testable ICs or built-in self-test architectures.
  • Integrate designs into mixed-signal and AMS modeling simulations that support chip-level verification.
  • Translate circuit requirements into layout directions that address signal integrity, matching, thermal considerations, and related concerns.
  • Direct and review IC layout activities using Cadence Layout tools.
  • Create physical-design parasitic extractions and analyze their impact.
  • Specify, direct, and perform design characterization and verification of ICs and electronic modules.
  • Develop, configure, and run complex characterization tests using test and measurement equipment and lab tools, including LabView and Python for automation.
  • Conduct concept, preliminary, critical, and fracture reviews to ensure device quality, capability, and functional requirements.
  • Review EDA tool vendor offerings to identify improvements to existing processes or methods.
