About The Position

Ampera Clean Energy is seeking a Principal Generator Design Engineer (Electromagnetics) to lead the clean‑sheet electromagnetic design of MW-class custom electric generators. This role owns the electrical machine architecture and electromagnetic performance of large rotating generators, from initial concept through hardware testing and model correlation. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in electrical machine theory, hands‑on experience designing large generators from first principles, and the judgment to make architecture decisions that persist through fabrication and test. This is a design‑focused engineering role eligible for hybrid‑remote work at the discretion of the director. During periods of prototype builds, assembly, or test campaigns, extended on‑site presence will be required.

Requirements

  • Experience designing electric motors or generators from concept to hardware release
  • Direct experience with large rotating machinery (multi‑MW preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or closely related field
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tools
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • Experience supporting hardware testing in industrial, aerospace, energy, or heavy manufacturing environments

Responsibilities

  • Lead clean‑sheet design of MW-class electric generators, including topology selection (synchronous, permanent magnet, or hybrid architectures)
  • Perform electromagnetic design and analysis, including: Stator and rotor configuration, Winding design and insulation systems, Magnetic materials selection, Loss modeling (copper, core, windage, stray)
  • Define electrical performance requirements including voltage, current, efficiency, thermal margins, and transient behavior
  • Perform detailed electromagnetic analysis using analytical methods and numerical tools
  • Model and predict: Copper, core, stray, and windage‑related electromagnetic losses, Flux distributions, saturation behavior, and thermal loss inputs
  • Correlate electromagnetic models to test data and drive iterative design improvement
  • Define electrical loss breakdowns and thermal inputs for cooling system design
  • Specify allowable temperature limits, margins, and operating derates from an electrical perspective
  • Define electrical interface requirements for mechanical and structural teams
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical and thermal engineers while retaining clear EM ownership
  • Define electrical instrumentation and measurements for generator testing
  • Support electrical testing, data acquisition, and validation activities
  • Analyze test results, validate models, and refine electromagnetic designs
