About The Position

Elon University is seeking a full-time Principal Faculty member to join the founding team of the developing Physician Assistant (PA) program within the Department of Physician Assistant Studies in Charlotte. This individual will play a central role in the launch, delivery, and continuous improvement of the program, with primary responsibilities spanning course development, instructional design, assessment strategy, and student success. The successful candidate will develop courses within the approved curriculum, build and manage course content within the learning management system and create and implement high-quality assessments, including exam construction and deployment. This faculty member will actively engage in teaching, student mentorship, and academic advising, contributing to a supportive and outcomes-driven learning environment. In addition, the faculty member will support programmatic assessment and accreditation efforts, including data collection, analysis, and reporting aligned with ARC-PA standards. This includes contributing to the Self-Study Report (SSR), ongoing outcomes tracking, and preparation for the program’s continued accreditation review following graduation of the inaugural cohort. The role also includes collaboration in curriculum evaluation and refinement, participation in faculty governance, and engagement with community and clinical partners to support the program’s mission and student learning experiences. This PA program is part of the Elon University’s School of Health Sciences (SHS), which currently includes an existing Department of Physician Assistant Studies program established in 2012, a Doctor of Physical Therapy program established in 1998, and Department of Nursing program established in 2021, located in Elon, NC. Additionally, a Clinical mental Health Counseling program launched this year, with cohorts in Elon and in Charlotte. Principal faculty report directly to the Founding Chair/Program Director. The appointment for this position will be either tenure track, contingent on eligibility, or an ongoing, non-tenure track line. Requirements

  • Terminal degree in physician assistant studies or equivalent professional degree in a relevant healthcare discipline combined with educational experience.
  • Prior teaching experience in higher education or health professions education strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience (minimum of three years strongly preferred).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Evidence of commitment to collaboration, innovation, and supporting student success.
  • Familiarity with, or willingness to learn, learning management systems (LMS), Canvas, ExamSoft, Exxat, VH Dissector, and related educational technology.
  • Proficiency with general office technology (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of the program and contribute to support of accreditation compliance with ARC-PA.
  • Direct academic courses: Coordinate the sequencing and delivery of content within assigned courses in the didactic and clinical year. Coordinate the implementation of student evaluation within these courses.
  • Serve as lecturer, lab instructor, small group facilitator, and evaluator in assigned didactic and clinical phase courses; lecture in other courses according to subject matter expertise.
  • Demonstrate excellence and innovation in teaching while proactively addressing the evolving needs of the program and its students.
  • Establish and foster relationships with clinical partners and preceptors to support student training.
  • Support and engage in admissions activities.
  • Participate in recruitment activities and represent the program at community events.
  • Assist with other departmental responsibilities such as proctoring exams, grading OSCEs, interviewing admissions candidates, etc.
  • Serve as Scholarly Project advisor.
  • Advise and provide academic counseling for students in both the academic and clinical phases.
  • Serve on departmental, School of Health Sciences, and University committees as elected or appointed.
  • Support the admissions process through applicant review, records tracking, process improvement initiatives, and service on the program-level Admissions Committee.
  • Maintain a record of ongoing scholarly activity and faculty development.
  • Assist with program self-assessment and improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
