Principal Experience Designer

AutodeskToronto, ON
CA$116,000 - CA$170,500

About The Position

Help shape how millions of people experience AI inside the tools they use to design and make the world. As Principal Experience Designer on the platform team behind the Autodesk Assistant, you’ll define the interaction patterns that every Autodesk product team adopts when they bring AI to their customers. It’s a rare canvas: the patterns you set will show up across the software behind the world’s buildings, products, and content. Designers at Autodesk can think across the system, champion design ideas, collaborate with stakeholders, advocate for the customer, and deliver impactful data-driven designs. Our designers use creative and innovative solutions to deliver high-quality experiences that delight our customers. The Autodesk Assistant is how customers will experience AI across our Design and Make platform, embedded inside Autodesk products. In this position you’ll set the design direction for the conversational, agentic, and visual interaction patterns the Assistant exposes to every product team in the portfolio. You’ll join a platform team whose goal is to make AI feel trustworthy, capable, and unmistakably Autodesk everywhere it appears. The patterns you define will ship to millions of professionals, and the trust bar for AI here is unusually high. Our platform team stewards the patterns that earn it. At Autodesk we look to hire innovators who reimagine what’s possible, those with diverse backgrounds who elevate our thinking, and leaders who help shape the world and our future. For consideration, candidates must include both a resume + portfolio with password when applying. Light travel, approximately 2-3 times per year, North America.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in UX design, product design, or a related field
  • Expert grounding in human-centered design, with a track record of applying it across complex problems
  • A clear point of view on what makes an AI experience high-quality, and the craft to back it up
  • You’ve designed conversational, agentic, or chat-based interaction patterns that other teams have adopted in their own work, the kind of systems-and-patterns thinking meant to be used by other teams rather than consumed once
  • You’ve shipped generative AI experiences to production with measurable user or business impact, including prototyping for edge cases, failure modes, and probabilistic outputs
  • You’re at home in ambiguity, staying effective when the model is probabilistic, the requirements are evolving, and the right answer is something you have to find
  • You’re AI-native in how you work. You use tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or Claude Code in your daily practice, and your portfolio includes work where AI tools were part of how it was made, not only what it was about
  • Fluency in Figma, plus the comfort to pick up adjacent prototyping tools as the work demands
  • A proven track record of mentoring designers and elevating the skill set of a design organization, as a player/coach who ships your own work while lifting the people around you
  • Excellent communication skills and a habit of close cross-functional collaboration

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing for multi-agent workflows or tool-use orchestration
  • Familiarity with frameworks for evaluating AI experience quality (e.g. Minimum Trustworthiness, Transformative Value, or equivalent quality-gate models)
  • Experience designing within organizational AI governance principles (Trusted AI, Responsible AI, Ethical AI, or equivalent)
  • A track record of external thought leadership in AI design: talks, writing, open-source patterns, or community contributions

Responsibilities

  • Define the conversational, agentic, and visual interaction patterns that every Autodesk product team adopts when integrating the Autodesk Assistant, including reasoning visibility (chain-of-thought), action controls (cancel, retry, accept, undo), and citation and grounding experiences
  • Author the Autodesk Assistant pattern library so teams across the portfolio adopt scalable, customizable patterns rather than building point solutions, and set what good looks like for AI experiences across Autodesk
  • Raise the bar for craft and responsible AI across the Autodesk Assistant program, defining and tracking the quality signals that tell us an agentic interaction earned its outcome
  • Mentor designers on the platform team, and coach designers across Autodesk who are shipping Autodesk Assistant capabilities inside their own products
  • Partner with senior leaders across Product, Engineering, and AI Research to shape Autodesk Assistant decisions across the portfolio, and push on frontier-model capabilities when the experience demands it

Benefits

  • annual cash bonuses
  • commissions for sales roles
  • stock grants
  • comprehensive benefits package
