Principal Enterprise Architect

TOMSCulver City, CA
$180,000 - $200,000Hybrid

About The Position

TOMS is seeking a Principal Enterprise Architect to join their AI & Enterprise Technology team. This role is for a senior individual contributor and technical lead who will set architectural direction for a blended team of engineers and contractors. The architect will evolve the enterprise platform and drive AI, integration, and cloud initiatives that directly support TOMS business goals. This position requires partnering with executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to align technology investments with business outcomes while elevating the technical capabilities of the teams.

Requirements

  • 12+ years in technology with 5+ years in enterprise or solutions architecture at a principal or staff level.
  • Proven experience as a technical lead for engineering teams and contractors without formal management authority.
  • Deep expertise in distributed systems, cloud-native platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), and enterprise integration patterns including APIs, event-driven architecture, and middleware.
  • Track record of influencing technical direction at the executive level with strong communication skills across technical and business audiences.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and experience architecting platforms to support machine learning and generative AI workloads.
  • Background in retail, e-commerce, or consumer goods; familiarity with Shopify, ERP, or supply chain platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • Cloud certifications (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Experience with TOGAF, Zachman, or similar architecture frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with integration platforms (MuleSoft, Boomi, Kafka)
  • Hands-on experience with AI/ML tooling (SageMaker, Vertex AI, Bedrock, or OpenAI).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the day-to-day technical lead for a blended team of junior engineers and contractors — guiding designs, unblocking delivery, and elevating quality through hands-on mentorship and code reviews.
  • Act as the primary technical escalation point, helping the team navigate complex trade-offs, resolve ambiguity, and make sound architectural decisions under pressure.
  • Break down complex initiatives into clear, actionable work and invest in the long-term growth of junior engineers through structured walkthroughs and stretch assignments.
  • Lead and drive the enterprise architecture roadmap, establishing patterns, standards, and guardrails across product, data, and infrastructure domains.
  • Lead architecture reviews for major initiatives, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with long-term business goals.
  • Drive the evolution of Tom's core platforms — commerce, supply chain, and customer experience — and establish reusable reference architectures that accelerate team velocity.
  • Lead the definition of Tom's integration strategy — setting standards for how internal systems, third-party platforms, and external partners connect via APIs, events, and messaging.
  • Lead the design and governance of API and event-driven integration patterns, including REST, GraphQL, and streaming architectures, ensuring reliability, scalability, and security across the enterprise.
  • Lead the evaluation and adoption of integration platforms (e.g., MuleSoft, Boomi, Kafka, EventBridge), providing guidance on fit, trade-offs, and total cost of ownership.
  • Establish data exchange standards and integration contracts between core systems — ERP, commerce, supply chain, and customer data — and ensure integrations are well-documented, testable, and built for long-term maintainability.
  • Lead the identification and architecture of high-impact AI/ML opportunities across commerce, supply chain, and customer experience — including the foundational infrastructure for model serving, feature stores, and experimentation frameworks.
  • Lead the evaluation of AI tools, platforms, and vendors — including generative AI solutions — providing clear guidance on build vs. buy trade-offs, integration risk, and long-term scalability.
  • Establish governance frameworks for responsible AI adoption, covering data privacy, model transparency, and bias mitigation standards.
  • Partner closely with product and business teams to translate AI opportunities into concrete architectural requirements and delivery roadmaps, and stay current on emerging trends to inform leadership decisions.
  • Partner with product, commercial, and operations leaders to translate business strategy into actionable technology architecture.
  • Represent Tom's technical capabilities in vendor negotiations and partner integrations; communicate architectural decisions and trade-offs clearly to executive stakeholders.
