About The Position

The Repair Development team is responsible for the creation of methods, processes and tools that are utilized for unplanned maintenance such as Major Component Exchanges and Uptower Repairs to Service Onshore and Offshore Wind Turbines. The Principal Engineer – Repair Development Process, provides senior technical leadership for development and implementation of repair processes and tooling solutions. This role is responsible for reviewing repair methods for technical soundness and field practicality, designs of simple tooling, and off-the-shelf tooling solutions to improve safety, quality, delivery, and cost. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering fundamentals with hands-on manufacturing, repair experience and a practical mindset for developing robust, easy-to-execute repair solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering , Manufacturing Engineering and/or Industrial Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 15 years of engineering experience
  • At least 5 years in repair development and tooling design .
  • 5 years of experience reviewing and developing repair processes, designing simple tooling, fixtures, support of wind field services or repair operations, including evaluating and implementing off-the-shelf/commercial tooling solutions .
  • 5 years of experience in manufacturing and repair process control, quality requirements, and field execution needs.
  • 2 years of experience mentoring and guiding others on repair process and tooling creation
  • Ability and willingness to climb wind turbines and work at heights.
  • Ability and willingness to travel globally up to 10% of the time when required.
  • Proficiency with English both written and oral communication.

Responsibilities

  • Chairperson for technical reviews of repair processes to ensure they are delivered with safety, quality, delivery and cost.
  • Create standard work templates to refine, and standardize repair methods, work instructions, process flows, and technical requirements.
  • Evaluate repair processes for safety, quality, cost, cycle time, manufacturability and ease of implementation.
  • Identify opportunities to and the process by which to review the use of commercially available/off-the-shelf tooling in place of custom solutions when appropriate.
  • Provide senior technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and cross-functional teams.
  • Drive simplification, standardization, and best-practice sharing across all repair development and Installation teams.
  • Work strategically with Product Line, Engineering Leaders, New Unit NPI Segments, Field Services, Region Leaders and Commercial to design and develop new Repair & Installation capabilities
  • Demonstrate accountability for all tooling design activities in Repair & Installation Engineering
  • Serve active mentor and reviewer roles to the New Unit NPI segments as they seek to incorporate Repair & Installation enabling features into the turbine designs.
  • Properly identify, mitigate, and escalate risk as appropriate to ensure Repair & Installation Systems activities meet design requirements and overall business objectives.
  • Develop new Repair & Installation design strategies and ensure robust validations to enable more innovative solutions and standard work.
  • Own and author Design Practices to ensure they capture design requirements and lessons learned built into new designs where applicable.
  • Maintain broad awareness of efforts within the Repair & Installation Engineering teams and work closely with other PEs & TLs to maintain team synergies, lessons learned and best practices.
  • Actively work with controlled title holder community to ensure communication, best practices, and lessons learned are leveraged across the Onshore business.
  • Maintain close ties and hands-on experience with Repair & Installation tooling
  • Stay current and abreast of academic & industry technology trends, conference proceedings, etc.
  • Engage with team members through mentoring and guidance.
