About The Position

Thomson Reuters is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the ONESOURCE Income Tax team. This role involves setting the long-term technical vision for current platforms and future applications, defining engineering standards, leading secure design practices, and representing engineering to various stakeholders including Product, Security, and senior leadership. The position is strategic and high-impact, requiring the individual to be a technical role model. The team works with products like Income Tax, Estimated Payments, DataQuery and Reporting, Workpapers, and General Ledger Manager Classic, which are critical for large US corporations. The technology stack includes .NET, Angular, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, with DataQuery running on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Looker, and products hosted on AWS and GCP, accessible via APIs. The team is also incorporating AI, including MCP servers and moving towards agentic AI.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time in senior, lead, or principal-level technical leadership roles
  • Strong experience with the Microsoft stack (.NET / C#), Angular, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and GCP, covering both applications and infrastructure
  • A proven record of designing and evolving large, high-availability enterprise applications, including modernizing legacy systems
  • Strong grounding in secure software design and application security, including Snyk (or similar tools), penetration testing and fixing what it finds, and secure coding standards
  • Familiarity with SOC audits and the engineering controls and evidence that compliance requires
  • Experience leading through influence: setting technical direction, defining patterns and standards, and guiding teams without managing them directly
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience working with Product, Security, program management, and senior leadership
  • Business sense and the ability to connect technical decisions to customer and business results

Nice To Haves

  • A background as a software or solutions architect
  • Experience in the tax, accounting, finance, or a related regulated domain
  • Experience with agentic AI, LLM-based solutions, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers
  • Experience with GCP data warehousing solutions and Looker
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (for example, Terraform or CloudFormation) and CI/CD practices
  • Experience designing and governing APIs used by external customers
  • Relevant cloud or security certifications (for example, AWS or GCP Professional Architect, or security certifications)
  • An external presence, such as conference talks, publications, patents, open-source contributions, or work on industry standards
  • Experience mentoring Senior and Lead engineers and building engineering culture across several teams

Responsibilities

  • Set the long-term technical vision for the ONESOURCE Income Tax portfolio.
  • Design solutions that support long-term business goals and contribute to strategy across the business unit.
  • Define the architecture patterns, standards, and best practices for future applications, understanding current legacy systems.
  • Help design the architecture for AI agents and expand the team's existing MCP server capabilities, identifying opportunities for AI to transform business operations.
  • Lead the team's approach to secure design, ensuring applications pass third-party penetration tests and meet high standards for vulnerability scanning.
  • Set up patterns and processes for the team to follow regarding security, rather than fixing issues directly.
  • Help the team navigate SOC audits and related controls.
  • Guide the design, maintenance, and modernization of applications and infrastructure on AWS and GCP.
  • Lead complex, high-risk projects affecting a sub-business unit, function, or major product.
  • Conduct development reviews and identify/fix weaknesses in existing designs.
  • Lead the selection, evaluation, and rollout of new technologies and tools, promoting their adoption across teams.
  • Work closely with Product Owners, ISRM/Security, the Product Management Office, and senior leadership, representing the engineering team and negotiating solutions.
  • Present complex technical ideas and technology strategy to executives, technical managers, peers, and developers.
  • Mentor and coach Senior and Lead engineers, helping individual contributors understand technical changes and strengthening the engineering culture.
  • Initiate and participate in cross-business unit work, identifying shared opportunities and recommending process, product, or service improvements.
  • Encourage practical innovation, contribute to standards and patents, and develop new concepts, services, and technologies.
  • Work with project managers to include technical status in project reports.
  • Lead or support several projects concurrently.
