About The Position

Thomson Reuters is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the ONESOURCE Income Tax team. This role involves leading the technical vision for a portfolio of critical tax products, including Income Tax, Estimated Payments, DataQuery and Reporting, Workpapers, and General Ledger Manager Classic. These products are essential for large US corporations' tax filings. The applications are built on .NET, Angular, SQL Server, and PostgreSQL, with DataQuery utilizing Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and a Looker front end. The ONESOURCE platform is hosted on AWS and GCP, and products are accessible via APIs. The team is integrating AI, including MCP servers, and moving towards agentic AI. The Principal Engineer will set long-term technical direction, establish engineering standards, lead secure design practices, assist with SOC audits and security testing, and represent engineering to various stakeholders including Product, Security, the Product Management Office, and senior leadership. This is a strategic, high-impact role intended to serve as a technical role model.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time in senior, lead, or principal-level technical leadership roles
  • Strong experience with the Microsoft stack (.NET / C#), Angular, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and GCP, covering both applications and infrastructure
  • A proven record of designing and evolving large, high-availability enterprise applications, including modernizing legacy systems
  • Strong grounding in secure software design and application security, including Snyk (or similar tools), penetration testing and fixing what it finds, and secure coding standards
  • Familiarity with SOC audits and the engineering controls and evidence that compliance requires
  • Experience leading through influence: setting technical direction, defining patterns and standards, and guiding teams without managing them directly
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience working with Product, Security, program management, and senior leadership
  • Business sense and the ability to connect technical decisions to customer and business results

Nice To Haves

  • A background as a software or solutions architect
  • Experience in the tax, accounting, finance, or a related regulated domain
  • Experience with agentic AI, LLM-based solutions, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers
  • Experience with GCP data warehousing solutions and Looker
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (for example, Terraform or CloudFormation) and CI/CD practices
  • Experience designing and governing APIs used by external customers
  • Relevant cloud or security certifications (for example, AWS or GCP Professional Architect, or security certifications)
  • An external presence, such as conference talks, publications, patents, open-source contributions, or work on industry standards
  • Experience mentoring Senior and Lead engineers and building engineering culture across several teams

Responsibilities

  • Set the long-term technical vision for the ONESOURCE Income Tax portfolio and design solutions that support long-term business goals and contribute to strategy across the business unit.
  • Understand current legacy systems in depth, and define architecture patterns, standards, and best practices for future applications.
  • Design the architecture for AI agents and expand the team's existing MCP server capabilities, identifying opportunities for AI and other technologies to transform business operations.
  • Lead the team's approach to secure design, ensuring applications pass third-party penetration tests and meet high standards for Snyk vulnerability scanning, and establish patterns and processes for the team to follow.
  • Guide the design, maintenance, and modernization of applications and infrastructure on AWS and GCP.
  • Lead complex projects with significant risk that affect a whole sub-business unit, function, or major product, conduct development reviews, and identify and fix weaknesses in existing designs.
  • Lead the selection, evaluation, and rollout of new technologies and tools, and promote their adoption across teams.
  • Work closely with Product Owners, ISRM/Security, the Product Management Office, and senior leadership, representing the engineering team and negotiating solutions.
  • Present complex technical ideas and technology strategy to executives, technical managers, peers, and developers.
  • Mentor and coach Senior and Lead engineers, help individual contributors understand proposed technical changes, and strengthen the wider engineering culture.
  • Initiate and participate in work across business units, identifying shared opportunities and recommending improvements to processes, products, or services.
  • Encourage practical innovation and contribute to standards and patents, developing new concepts, services, and technologies.
  • Work with project managers to include technical status in project reports and lead or support several projects at once.
