Principal Engineer IV(Onsite)
About The Position
As a Principal Engineer in Structural Engineering at Collins Aerospace, you will deliver finite element analysis (FEA) solutions that support product design, development, and optimization. You will lead efforts to refine modeling techniques, manage program deliverables, and drive innovation aligned with business goals. The position is onsite in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The role includes ownership and coordination of FEA program deliverables, presentation of reports and design recommendations, management of multiple projects and design iterations, development of program strategies and risk mitigation plans, and correlation of test failures to improve modeling methods. You will also advance modeling techniques, support training and methods development, and contribute to cross-functional process improvements. Collins Aerospace's Interiors team develops aviation interior products and services focused on innovation, safety, cost efficiency, comfort, connectivity, and security.
Requirements
- Typically requires a STEM degree and at least 8 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field and at least 5 years of experience.
- Experience in product analysis, particularly crash analysis, with virtual Anthropomorphic Test Devices (vATDs).
- Experience using and reviewing high strain rate material in LS-Dyna analysis runs.
- Acquired FEA document checking capability.
- Proficiency in LS-Dyna, Hyperworks, and LS-PrePost tools.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with scripting and automation tools such as Python, MATLAB, or VBA.
- Familiarity with TeamCenter, Siemens NX, and Primer.
- Experience with nonlinear analysis, fatigue analysis, and advanced crash analysis methods.
- Experience leading or guiding mechanical analysis teams as a subject matter expert.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of FEA program deliverables, including full program management and coordination with supporting engineers.
- Prepare and present FEA reports in review meetings and provide design update recommendations.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while facilitating design iterations.
- Develop program-specific strategies and implement risk mitigation plans.
- Correlate test failures to refine modeling methods and support program updates.
- Improve modeling techniques and implement the latest technology advancements.
- Author and support training modules, methods, and tools, and lead initiatives for method improvements.
- Participate in cross-functional process improvement efforts involving departments such as Quality, Production, and Sales.
