About The Position

The Principal Engineer, Commercial AI Forward Deployment is T-Mobile’s senior individual-contributor AI delivery leader on the Forward Deployment Engineering (FDE) team. The role owns end-to-end delivery of new agentic AI solutions in an assigned business domain, from initial scoping through production optimization. Working within requirements defined by technical program managers (TPMs) and business-unit (BU) stakeholders, the engineer owns the domain relationship, sets the FDE team’s technical agenda in that domain, and mentors other FDEs. The role leads without formal authority and builds trusted relationships with BU operations leaders, translating business requirements into agentic AI solutions. Performance is measured by validated return-on-investment (ROI) targets for each domain assignment. The engineer designs and delivers production AI solutions, including integrations, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, prompt orchestration, and multi-agent workflows. The role also builds and maintains data and integration layers, improves data quality, tests outcomes in production, and instruments systems for ongoing feedback and optimization. It contributes to FDE practice standards and knowledge transfer, while serving as the domain’s technical accountability point for AI safety, privacy, and responsible AI compliance, including T-Mobile’s CPNI and PII requirements. This is a hybrid role requiring work in the office three days per week. The successful candidate will be located in the Seattle, Washington, or Frisco, Texas, area. Travel is required. The position reports to the Sr Manager or Sr Director, Agentic Automation & FDE.

  • 7–10 years of production engineering experience, including at least 3 years delivering LLM-based agentic systems involving prompt engineering, RAG architecture, agent orchestration, and system integrations.
  • Track record of delivering production AI solutions that measurably improved a business outcome metric.
  • Ability to work within TPM-driven requirements processes and translate business needs into technical delivery.
  • At least 7 years of production Python engineering experience and proficiency in at least one of Go, TypeScript, or Java.
  • Ability to architect complex agentic systems and review and guide others’ technical designs.
  • Hands-on expertise designing and deploying production LLM systems, including prompt engineering, RAG architecture, agent orchestration, performance benchmarking, and hallucination mitigation at scale.
  • Proficiency in complex SQL, ETL/ELT pipeline design, and architecture of integrations connecting AI solutions to enterprise data sources at scale.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, AWS infrastructure (primary) or Azure/GCP, vector databases, and MLOps practices including model versioning, A/B testing, monitoring, and observability.
  • Ability to lead technical delivery in ambiguous environments without formal authority and communicate effectively with frontline operators, middle management, and C-suite stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate across enterprise business domains and design and implement guardrails, security controls, and responsible AI review processes.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with T-Mobile data privacy standards, including CPNI and PII requirements, and act as the technical accountability point for AI safety and compliance within the domain.
  • At least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in solutions engineering, forward deployment, or an embedded technical role at a high-growth AI or cloud company.
  • Experience navigating complex stakeholder environments from frontline operators through C-suite.
  • Background in enterprise technology adoption or change management.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full lifecycle of new agentic AI delivery within an assigned domain, from initial scoping through production optimization.
  • Partner with TPMs and BU stakeholders to define requirements, map workflows, and assess data and integration readiness.
  • Build and maintain relationships with BU operations leaders, managers, and end users; present domain ROI outcomes and delivery roadmaps to BU leadership quarterly.
  • Design and deliver agentic AI solutions in live production environments, including integrations, RAG pipelines, prompt orchestration, and multi-agent workflows.
  • Run controlled A/B experiments in production cohorts to measure and document validated ROI impact.
  • Instrument deployed systems with real-time logging and feedback collection to support continuous improvement.
  • Build and own integration layers connecting AI solutions to BU tools and data sources, including CRM, billing, inventory, and contract repositories.
  • Normalize BU-specific datasets, identify and close data quality gaps, and provide structured engineering handoffs of domain-specific insights to the practice.
  • Mentor and technically guide FDEs working in the assigned or adjacent domains.
  • Contribute to FDE practice standards, including engagement methodology, diagnostic frameworks, responsible AI reviews, and data security guidelines.
  • File bi-weekly reports documenting failure modes, edge cases, and performance gaps; participate in rotation planning and knowledge transfer for incoming FDEs.
  • Ensure delivered solutions meet T-Mobile data governance and security standards, including CPNI and PII requirements, and serve as the domain’s technical accountability point for AI safety and compliance.
  • Translate domain delivery learnings into practice improvements with TPMs and practice leadership, and represent validated ROI outcomes in cross-functional senior leadership forums.
