Principal Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Systems Engineer

Northrop Grumman•Melbourne, FL
•$98,400 - $147,600

About The Position

The Principal Systems Engineer – E3 provides technical leadership for electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) across complex aerospace systems and programs. The role performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk assessment, and supportability and effectiveness analyses throughout the product lifecycle, from concept and design through fabrication, testing, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal. The engineer converts customer and product E3 requirements into total system solutions while accounting for technical, schedule, and cost constraints. This includes functional and timeline analysis, trade studies, requirements allocation, and interface definition to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. The role also leads E3 design and test activities, supports program reviews, and provides technical direction and mentoring to less-experienced engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 5 years of engineering experience, or a Master’s degree in STEM and 3 years of engineering experience, or a PhD in STEM and 1 year of engineering experience.
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain special program access before starting employment, as required.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-461 and/or MIL-STD-464.
  • At least 1 year of experience in RF, test, or design engineering.
  • Experience developing and decomposing system requirements, including translating customer or specification-level requirements into system-, subsystem-, and component-level requirements and maintaining requirements traceability.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with a focus in electromagnetics, RF, or analog circuitry.
  • Experience with defense and aerospace industry practices and programmatic support, such as BOE development, RFP/RFQ responses, ROM estimates, CAM responsibilities, WBS planning, and E3 compliance risk assessments.
  • Extensive design experience with EMI filters, circuit layout and analysis for E3, shielding, lightning protection, and cable/harness design.
  • Working knowledge of E3 modeling and simulation using commercially available tools such as HFSS, CST, SPICE-based tools, or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, interpret, allocate, tailor, and flow down E3 requirements across design levels, ensuring requirements are clear, testable, and traceable.
  • Engage across all phases of the program lifecycle and communicate E3 concepts to audiences unfamiliar with E3 topics.
  • Prepare and present E3 content at internal and external design reviews, including issues, risks, mitigations, and compliance status.
  • Develop E3 design guidelines and best practices; create models and perform EMI/EMC analyses on components, subsystems, and systems.
  • Lead the design of grounding schemes, chassis and harness shielding, EMI filters, and interface circuitry to achieve EMC.
  • Prepare and review E3 test procedures, test reports, technical analyses, and E3 control plans; provide E3 input to cross-discipline design reviews.
  • Develop E3 test procedures and support or lead testing in accordance with applicable governmental and industry standards, assess results, and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Train, mentor, and provide technical direction to less-experienced E3 engineers.
  • Develop processes, procedures, documentation, and protocols that advance E3 engineering capabilities within the organization.
  • Perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk assessment, and supportability and effectiveness analyses.
  • Conduct functional analysis, timeline analysis, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation, and interface definition.
