About The Position

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, serving 6.8 million residents across 68 Lower Peninsula counties. The Principal Electric Engineer is a departmental subject matter expert responsible for the engineering and design of large, complex projects for the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage systems. This role collaborates with a team of engineers and technicians, coordinating across the organization and with external stakeholders on complex technical projects within their area of expertise. They are specialists in electrical utility systems and products design, layout, and implementation. The Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) West Region Primary Engineer will be a key contributor to the I&C Engineering Division, supporting Capital and O&M projects ranging from new electric substations to single I&C device modifications. The selected candidate will provide project leadership and workload management, oversee work by internal and external design teams, and support efforts to improve division processes. This position requires the ability to work effectively with various stakeholders, including project planners, engineers, managers, construction personnel, and other engineering groups. The role involves developing project scope documents, timelines, cost, and manpower estimates, and resolving potential issues. Occasional field visits to substations or generating plants may be required. The engineer will provide subject matter expertise and mentorship to design engineering analysts, lead problem-solving efforts, and utilize automation to remove waste. Responsibilities also include ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, and customer requirements; writing reports and compiling data; preparing specifications for electrical equipment; designing, controlling, and implementing electrical systems; managing project development; performing engineering tasks using computer-assisted software; designing and maintaining electrical instruments and systems; collaborating with clients and coworkers; monitoring project progress and budget; and establishing construction and manufacturing standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR Engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with 7 years of experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity
  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering
  • Proficient in design and calculation software

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power).

Responsibilities

  • Engineering and design of large complex projects for the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage system.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers and technicians and coordinate across the organization and external stakeholders on large complex technical projects.
  • Provide project lead and workload management/oversight for projects in the west region to support Capital and O&M projects.
  • Provide matrix assigned oversight of work by internal design engineering analysts and externally contracted projects.
  • Support and may spearhead efforts to improve division/section processes and meeting common objectives.
  • Utilize the employee team for management of the section workload and identifying when additional resources may be required.
  • Contribute to staff decisions and discussions and help to shape the future direction of the Division in technology, process, managerial and administrative areas.
  • Work well with others, including project planners/sponsors, project engineers, project/program managers, schedulers, construction coordinators/supervisors, protection engineers, electric field lab, construction, operations and engineers in both the substation and HVD lines groups.
  • Develop and respond to project scope documents, timelines, cost, and manpower estimates, etc., and resolve potential issues.
  • Perform occasional field visits to electric substations or generating plants to define project scope, determine existing conditions, or meet with field technical employees.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and mentorship to design engineering analyst employees.
  • Lead and participate in internal and cross-functional problem-solving efforts and utilize / institute automation to remove waste.
  • Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies.
  • Provide technical support to other departments and personnel as needed.
  • Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials.
  • Estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters.
  • Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes.
  • Prepare contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda.
  • Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects.
  • Monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management.
  • Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps.
  • Investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner.
  • Establishing construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations.
  • Oversee and manage the installation of electrical equipment and components.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.
