About The Position

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, serving natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million residents across 68 Lower Peninsula counties. The Principal Electrical Engineer is a departmental subject matter expert responsible for the engineering and design of large, complex projects for the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage systems. This role collaborates with a team of engineers and technicians, coordinating across the organization and with external stakeholders on significant technical projects within their area of expertise. They are specialists in electrical utility systems and products, focusing on design, layout, and implementation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering.
  • Proficient in design and calculation software.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR Engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with 7 years of experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred, other disciplines will be considered based on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies and providing technical support to other departments and personnel as needed.
  • Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Designing, controlling, and implementing electrical systems and products and serving as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters. Managing the development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes. Preparing contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda.
  • Collaborating with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects and monitoring project progress and budget, and preparing reports for upper management.
  • Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps and investigating and resolving project issues in a timely manner.
  • Establishing construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations.
  • Overseeing and managing the installation of electrical equipment and components.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.
