About The Position

Bitsight is seeking a Principal DevOps Engineer to shape the architecture and operation of its cloud platform. The role combines technical direction and hands-on delivery, partnering with stakeholders across the organization to understand business needs, set infrastructure direction, balance priorities, and align investment. The engineer will help R&D teams solve challenging platform problems and create reusable patterns and self-service tools. The position owns infrastructure architecture across AWS, with growing GCP and Azure footprints; platform availability and incident follow-through; Kubernetes operations at scale; reusable Terraform modules; and infrastructure for Bitsight’s internal AI gateway. It also supports US and EU data residency parity, observability and cost management, and mentorship across DevOps and backend engineering. The role may also run proofs of concept and prototype solutions, evaluate their cost benefits, and bring the best options into production. This is a remote role in the Eastern Time zone, with Boston preferred. The anticipated US annual base salary range is $126,000–$180,000. The role is eligible for a bonus or commission plan and an equity grant. Bitsight offers medical, dental, and vision insurance; paid parental leave; flexible time off; a 401(k) plan with employee and company contribution opportunities; life and disability insurance; and tuition reimbursement. The role uses AI-assisted transcription during interviews; hiring decisions are made by the recruitment team.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years in infrastructure, SRE, or DevOps roles.
  • At least 3 years at staff or principal level setting technical direction.
  • Deep AWS expertise, including EKS, RDS, S3, and IAM.
  • Working knowledge of GCP or Azure.
  • Strong Terraform skills and a record of building modules adopted by other teams.
  • Production Kubernetes experience, including Helm, GitOps workflows, and cluster lifecycle management.
  • Experience owning uptime for production systems, including on-call and incident command.
  • Judgment and maturity to evaluate AI opportunities, turn them into capabilities, monitor results, and mature usage.
  • Clear written communication, including the ability to write architecture proposals understandable to both executives and junior engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multi-region deployments or EU data residency requirements.
  • Familiarity with Crossplane, kgateway, or similar platform-engineering tools.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms or CLIs.

Responsibilities

  • Set and document infrastructure architecture decisions across AWS, with growing GCP and Azure footprints.
  • Define SLOs for core platform services, own availability, lead major incident response, and ensure post-mortem follow-ups are completed.
  • Operate EKS clusters, including capacity planning, node and pod density, graceful shutdown, and developer access models.
  • Build and maintain reusable Terraform modules, including for RDS, S3, and IAM, and cleanly retire legacy infrastructure repositories and accounts.
  • Operate and improve the internal AI gateway using LiteLLM and Langfuse; evaluate alternatives, onboard models, and build cost reporting, guardrails, and model-request policies.
  • Maintain parity between US and EU environments to support regulated customers’ data residency requirements.
  • Design logging and metrics pipelines using OpenSearch, Sumo Logic, and S3 archival, and enforce lifecycle policies, orphaned-resource cleanup, and accurate tagging.
  • Mentor DevOps and backend engineers, review designs, and turn repeated requests into self-service tooling.
  • Run proofs of concept and prototype solutions where appropriate, evaluate cost benefits, and advance the strongest solutions.
