Principal DevOps Engineer

BitSight Technologies•Boston, MA

About The Position

Bitsight is seeking a Principal DevOps Engineer to shape how the company builds and operates its cloud platform. The role combines architectural leadership with hands-on delivery, working with stakeholders across the organization to understand business needs, set infrastructure direction, balance priorities, and agree on investment. R&D teams will bring complex platform problems to the role, with the expectation that solutions become reusable patterns for others. The engineer will own platform architecture across AWS, with growing GCP and Azure footprints; establish and meet availability objectives; operate Kubernetes at scale; build reusable infrastructure-as-code modules; and lead internal AI platform infrastructure. The role also supports parity between US and EU environments, improves observability and cost visibility, and mentors engineers while turning repeated requests into self-service tools. The position is remote in the Eastern Time zone, with Boston preferred. The anticipated US hiring base salary range is $126,000–$180,000 annually. The role is also eligible for a bonus or commission plan and an equity grant. Bitsight offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance; paid parental leave; flexible time off; a 401(k) plan with employee and company contribution opportunities; life and disability insurance; and tuition reimbursement.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience in infrastructure, SRE, or DevOps roles.
  • At least 3 years at staff or principal level setting technical direction.
  • Deep AWS expertise, including EKS, RDS, S3, and IAM.
  • Working knowledge of GCP or Azure.
  • Strong Terraform skills and a track record of building modules adopted by other teams.
  • Production Kubernetes experience, including Helm, GitOps workflows, and cluster lifecycle management.
  • Experience owning uptime for production systems, including on-call and incident command.
  • Judgment and maturity to evaluate AI opportunities and turn them into capabilities.
  • Clear written communication, including the ability to write architecture proposals understandable to both executives and junior engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multi-region deployments or EU data residency requirements.
  • Familiarity with Crossplane, kgateway, or similar platform-engineering tools.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms or CLIs.

Responsibilities

  • Own and document platform architecture and infrastructure decisions across AWS, with growing GCP and Azure footprints.
  • Set service-level objectives for core platform services, maintain availability, lead major incident response, and ensure post-mortem follow-ups are completed.
  • Operate EKS clusters, including capacity planning, node and pod density, graceful shutdown, and developer access models.
  • Write and maintain reusable Terraform modules, including for RDS, S3, and IAM, and cleanly retire old infrastructure repositories and accounts.
  • Operate and improve the internal AI gateway using LiteLLM and Langfuse; evaluate alternatives, onboard models, and develop cost reporting, guardrails, and model-request policies.
  • Maintain parity between US and EU environments to support regulated customers and data residency requirements.
  • Design logging and metrics pipelines using tools such as OpenSearch and Sumo Logic, with archival to S3; improve cost visibility and enforce lifecycle policies, orphaned-resource cleanup, and accurate tagging.
  • Mentor DevOps and backend engineers, review designs, and develop self-service tooling from repeated one-off requests.
  • Run proofs of concept and prototype solutions where appropriate, evaluate their cost benefits, and bring the best solutions to fruition.
  • Evaluate AI opportunities, convert them into capabilities, monitor results, and mature AI usage.
