About The Position

Walmart is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to design and deliver advanced AI/ML capabilities across Global Governance. This role will apply machine learning, GenAI, agentic AI, advanced analytics, and responsible AI to complex problems spanning Security, Compliance, Privacy, Legal, Product Safety, Trade Compliance, and related domains. You will partner across Business, Product, Engineering, and Data Science to translate high-value problems into scalable AI solutions and help establish reusable patterns that improve speed, quality, and measurable business outcomes. Global Governance Technology builds scalable technology and AI capabilities that help protect Walmart, its associates, customers, and businesses across critical governance and risk domains. Our teams work across Security, Compliance, Privacy, Legal, Product Safety, and Global Trade. We solve complex, high-impact problems where trust, explainability, reliability, governance, and human oversight matter. We are applying machine learning, GenAI, agentic AI, computer vision, graph intelligence, optimization, and automation to move from reactive workflows toward more predictive, proactive, and intelligent decision-making at Walmart scale.

Requirements

• Strong expertise in machine learning, applied statistics, optimization, and production AI systems, with hands-on experience in GenAI and agentic architectures such as RAG, tool use, orchestration, evaluation, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Experience in areas such as NLP, graph ML, anomaly detection, causal inference, forecasting, or optimization is highly valued.
• Strong technical judgment, programming skills, experience with large-scale data and ML platforms, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams and communicate complex technical trade-offs clearly.
• Bachelors degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 5 years' experience in an analytics related field.
• Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 3 years' experience in an analytics related field.
• 7 years' experience in an analytics or related field.

• Data science, machine learning, optimization models, PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics, Publications or active peer reviewer in related journals or conference, Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R, Using open source frameworks (for example, scikit learn, tensorflow, torch)

Responsibilities

• Design and deploy production-scale AI/ML solutions across risk intelligence, investigations, document intelligence, anomaly detection, entity resolution, graph analytics, forecasting, optimization, and agentic AI.
• Build end-to-end capabilities spanning data preparation, modeling, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with Engineering and Product on architecture, reusable AI services, and build-vs-buy decisions.
• Establish strong evaluation and Responsible AI practices, mentor other scientists, and contribute to technical standards and platform strategy across Global Governance.
