About The Position

The Principal Business Technology Engineer is a hands-on engineering role focused on building, integrating, automating, and supporting the systems used to run Payentry’s business. The role spans CRM, ERP, data and analytics, billing, workflow automation, and related enterprise applications. Near-term success will be measured by strong technical delivery. As the function matures, the role may expand to broader ownership of the roadmap, governance, vendors, and team development. This role is intended for a hands-on individual contributor, not someone whose recent experience is primarily in people or vendor management. The engineer personally designs, builds, tests, deploys, and supports applications, scripts, services, and workflow automations. The role also serves as a hands-on technical owner for enterprise applications and integrations, and applies sound engineering practices to production work. The role translates business needs into requirements, technical designs, workstreams, and prioritized backlogs; coordinates projects and vendors; partners with Finance, Operations, Sales, and other functions; and communicates progress, tradeoffs, risks, and decisions to senior leaders. Over time, responsibilities may grow to include roadmap ownership, governance, mentoring, hiring, and team leadership as business needs justify additional resources.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of demonstrated hands-on experience across software engineering, data engineering, enterprise applications, or solutions engineering.
  • Experience delivering in a fast-paced, project-based environment, such as consulting or an equivalent environment.
  • Strong SQL fundamentals and experience working with relational and analytical data models.
  • Strong API and systems integration fundamentals.
  • Working proficiency in Python or a comparable general-purpose programming language.
  • Understanding of dimensional modeling, data quality, lineage, and query performance.
  • Experience with engineering practices including source control, testing, code review, documentation, release management, and secure development.
  • Ability to translate business needs into technical requirements and delivery plans, and to communicate technical matters clearly to senior leaders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CRM and ERP platforms.
  • Experience in modern cloud and SaaS environments.
  • Experience with Zoho, NetSuite, Snowflake, DataNest, or comparable platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, deploy, and support lightweight applications, scripts, services, and workflow automations.
  • Write performant SQL and build or troubleshoot data transformations, pipelines, reconciliations, and reporting datasets.
  • Design, build, and troubleshoot integrations across SaaS platforms and internal systems, including authentication, transformation logic, retries, error handling, logging, monitoring, and production support.
  • Serve as a hands-on technical owner for CRM, ERP, analytics and data platforms, billing, and related systems; configure and extend platforms using native workflows, custom objects, APIs, scripts, and platform-specific development tools.
  • Understand systems of record, application boundaries, interfaces, dependencies, and data flows; diagnose root causes across code, databases, APIs, scheduled jobs, permissions, and vendor platforms.
  • Use source control, testing, code review, documentation, release management, and secure development practices; make pragmatic build-versus-buy-versus-configure decisions.
  • Review and challenge technical work delivered by vendors or contractors.
  • Turn ambiguous business needs into requirements, technical designs, executable workstreams, and prioritized backlogs.
  • Maintain project milestones, owners, dependencies, risks, decision logs, and status reporting through implementation and stabilization.
  • Determine whether work should be handled directly, delegated internally, or sourced externally; scope work, evaluate technical approaches, manage implementation partners, and hold vendors accountable for quality, timelines, documentation, and knowledge transfer.
  • Partner with Finance, Operations, Sales, and other functions to understand workflows, challenge assumptions, identify bottlenecks, and translate business problems into technology solutions.
  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, project status, resource needs, risks, and decisions clearly to senior leaders.
  • Own delivery as a highly hands-on individual contributor and, as business needs justify, contribute to roadmap, governance, mentoring, hiring, and team leadership.
