This is a key leadership position reporting to the Laboratory Director and serving as a member of the Laboratory’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The role is responsible for managing the lab’s computing workforce (approximately 1400 employees) and enhancing the intellectual vibrancy of computing and related disciplines at the lab. The position involves shaping the Laboratory’s strategic vision, developing and articulating a strategy for the Principal Directorate, managing discretionary R&D resources, and sustaining relationships with government agencies funding computing R&D. LLNL is a leader in advanced computing, home to the world's fastest computer, El Capitan, and its computing personnel support a wide range of programs including information technology, data science, computational mathematics, artificial intelligence, software engineering, and high-performance computing. LLNL operates as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, focusing on national security missions through advanced science and technology. The Laboratory's mission includes ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the nation's nuclear stockpile, supporting threat reduction, improving national and international security, strengthening energy and environmental security, assuring U.S. leadership in strategic S&T areas, and enhancing economic competitiveness. LLNL has a multidisciplinary workforce of approximately 9000 employees and an annual budget exceeding $3.5 billion. This position may offer a hybrid schedule, allowing for a blend of in-person and virtual work, with potential flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.
