About The Position

A Principal Architect is responsible for defining and driving technology strategy across multiple products, platforms, and organizational domains. They serve as a recognized subject matter expert who aligns architectural decisions with business outcomes while providing technical vision, governance, and leadership across the enterprise. They develop strategic technology roadmaps, establish architectural standards and patterns, and guide engineering teams through complex technical decisions. Principal Architects partner with product, engineering, and business leaders to ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture objectives while enabling innovation and long-term scalability. They influence architecture and technology decisions across multiple teams, mentor architects and senior engineers, and actively contribute to the evolution of Best Buy's technology landscape. We are responsible for shaping the technology strategy and architecture that enables Best Buy's digital and business capabilities. Our team partners closely with engineering, product management, and business leaders to define future-state architectures, guide strategic investments, and ensure solutions are scalable, secure, resilient, and aligned with enterprise standards. We collaborate across multiple technology domains to drive innovation, enable business growth, and continuously improve the technology ecosystem that powers Best Buy's customer and employee experiences. This role is remote eligible, which means you would work virtually from home or another non-Best Buy location.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience in software engineering, technology architecture, infrastructure architecture, data architecture, or related disciplines
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience developing architecture strategies, standards, and roadmaps for complex technology environments
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams and organizational boundaries

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years of relevant technology experience with progressively increasing architectural leadership responsibilities
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or related field
  • Experience leading large-scale modernization, transformation, or cloud adoption initiatives
  • Strong executive communication, stakeholder management, and organizational influence skills
  • Experience mentoring architects, senior engineers, and technical leaders
  • Knowledge of architecture governance frameworks, technology strategy development, and enterprise architecture practices
  • Deep expertise in one or more architecture disciplines: Application Architecture, Data Architecture, Infrastructure/Cloud Architecture, Integration Architecture, Enterprise Architecture

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive technology strategy, architectural vision, and roadmaps across multiple product areas, domains, or platforms
  • Establish and maintain architecture principles, standards, reference architectures, and technology patterns
  • Partner with engineering, product, and business leaders to align technology investments with strategic business objectives
  • Review, guide, and approve solution architectures, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture goals and standards
  • Influence technical decision-making across teams, organizations, and leadership levels
  • Identify opportunities to modernize platforms, optimize architectures, reduce technical debt, and improve operational efficiency
  • Mentor architects, staff engineers, and engineering leaders while fostering technical excellence throughout the organization
  • Lead complex cross-functional initiatives involving multiple systems, teams, and stakeholder groups
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends to inform future architecture direction and innovation strategies
  • Facilitate and contribute to Architecture Review Board activities and enterprise governance processes
  • Develop and maintain current-state and future-state technology roadmaps, including capability assessments and gap analyses
  • Collaborate with product management to ensure roadmaps consider funding, resource planning, and delivery priorities
  • Communicate architecture strategies, tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations effectively to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Drive consistency, scalability, security, reliability, and maintainability across technology solutions
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the Architecture Community of Practice and enterprise architecture initiatives
