Principal Architect- Data SRE

JPMorgan Chase & Co.•Palo Alto, CA
•$204,250 - $285,000

About The Position

As a Principal Architect within JPMorganChase’s Infrastructure Platforms organization, you will provide architecture expertise to develop and enhance platforms using modern cloud-based technologies and support adoption of strategic enterprise reliability solutions. You will partner with Site Reliability Engineering teams, application developers, platform engineering teams, and senior technology leaders to guide the design, adoption, and evolution of reliability tooling and engineering practices across the organization. This hands-on architecture leadership role combines strategic architecture, technical engineering depth, and cross-functional influence. You will define enterprise architecture and work directly with engineers to review integrations, identify failure modes, and guide practical implementation. The goal is to improve resiliency, operational excellence, and software delivery outcomes across a large, complex technology environment. During the first year, expected outcomes include delivering a prioritized architecture roadmap for reliability tooling; establishing a minimum set of cross-organization reliability patterns tested with early-adopter teams; defining architectural guardrails for new tooling and integrations; and creating a repeatable intake and decision process for requests to adopt, extend, procure, or build reliability capabilities. The position is subject to Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act. Any employment offer is contingent on JPMorganChase’s review of criminal conviction history, including pretrial diversions or program entries.

Requirements

  • Formal training or certification in architecture concepts and 10+ years of applied experience.
  • Extensive experience in software, application, or platform architecture; Site Reliability Engineering; or comparable technical leadership roles in large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Hands-on experience delivering system design, application development, testing, and operational stability for distributed systems and production applications.
  • Expertise in one or more programming languages and modern software engineering practices.
  • Deep knowledge of software architecture, cloud-native technologies, distributed systems, application development, and enterprise technology platforms.
  • Strong experience designing, operating, and improving highly reliable production systems, including observability, telemetry, monitoring, alerting, and service health capabilities.
  • Experience with service-level objectives and indicators, error budgets, incident management, operational readiness, resiliency engineering, disaster recovery, and capacity planning.
  • Ability to establish reusable architecture patterns and turn technical practices into execution-ready cross-organization assets, such as reference architectures, templates, checklists, decision trees, and architecture decision records, and drive their adoption across multiple engineering teams.
  • Experience designing integrations across developer platforms, operational tooling, service catalogs, workflow systems, automation services, and production engineering environments.
  • Demonstrated experience applying enterprise-authorized AI capabilities in architecture and engineering workflows, with strong validation practices and awareness of data sensitivity.
  • Ability to lead through influence across SRE, application engineering, product, security, platform, operations, and senior stakeholder communities, and explain technical trade-offs in engineering and business terms.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in financial services or other highly regulated, high-availability environments.
  • Experience with cloud-native platforms, Kubernetes, container orchestration, service mesh technologies, infrastructure automation, and distributed systems architecture.
  • Experience designing and scaling internal developer, operational, or engineering productivity platforms for large engineering organizations.
  • Expertise in observability technologies, incident-response platforms, reliability analytics, and automated remediation capabilities.
  • Experience establishing service ownership models, operational governance frameworks, and enterprise production-readiness standards across a large organization.
  • Understanding of security architecture, data classification, access controls, compliance requirements, auditability, and retention policies related to operational data.
  • Experience mentoring architects, Site Reliability Engineers, and engineering teams while leading large-scale reliability or platform transformation initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Advise cross-functional teams on technology selection, architecture decisions, and reliability strategies to achieve target-state architecture and improve operational resilience.
  • Define architectural direction, integration standards, and non-functional requirements for observability, incident management, resiliency testing, operational readiness, service ownership, and automation platforms, including ownership and lifecycle expectations for tools, integrations, extensions, and operational data.
  • Establish reusable enterprise patterns for service onboarding, service-level indicators and objectives, error budgets, dashboards, runbooks, incident management, automated remediation, and operational handoffs; maintain a production-readiness baseline with required service ownership, objectives, alert thresholds, telemetry, tested runbooks, incident routing, and resilience and recovery testing.
  • Guide engineering teams in embedding telemetry, monitoring, alerting, resilience validation, and operational readiness throughout the software delivery lifecycle; support adoption through pilots, reference implementations, onboarding guidance, and feedback-driven improvements.
  • Create scalable architectural frameworks and partner with engineering teams to design and develop APIs, automation workflows, event-driven integrations, and shared reliability services.
  • Develop secure, high-quality production code and review and debug others’ code to ensure alignment with architecture, resiliency, security, and governance standards.
  • Evaluate proposed tooling and architecture solutions, promote reuse-first approaches, and establish guardrails that reduce duplication while balancing enterprise consistency with teams’ differing operational needs.
  • Develop multi-year roadmaps aligned with business priorities, architecture strategy, and enterprise reliability objectives; use incident trends, operational feedback, and adoption data to refine patterns and prioritize tooling.
  • Apply enterprise-authorized artificial intelligence capabilities in architecture and engineering workflows, using human-in-the-loop validation and appropriate handling of sensitive data.
  • Serve as the function’s subject matter expert for reliability architecture and contribute to technical methods, governance models, and AI-enabled engineering patterns that improve operational excellence at scale.
  • Communicate technical trade-offs, delivery impact, reliability risk, and investment needs to engineers, architects, product leaders, and executive stakeholders; coach technical and product teams on reliability patterns and their application.
