About The Position

The Principal Analyst, Operations and Health Systems Research works in Biogen’s Quantitative Sciences Development Organization, which uses applied machine learning and emerging technologies to advance disease research, clinical care, and patient empowerment. The role explores the intersection of health systems utilization and clinical research by developing data pipelines, features, and forecasting models. It integrates real-world data to create epidemiological and disease forecasting models that support clinical trial operations decision-making. The analyst applies operations research methods to understand behaviors and factors affecting clinical trial outcomes, generates and communicates evidence, and helps develop measures and metrics to assess model validity and performance throughout the model lifecycle.

Requirements

  • >= 5 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, technology, or healthcare industry, or extensive experience in academic or clinical centers of excellence.
  • Expertise leveraging electronic health records and other data derived from clinical care using current methodologies, programming languages, and tools.
  • Experience working on machine learning, operations research, and data science problems using formal software development lifecycle approaches and best practices within a software delivery organization.
  • Profound experience in data science, machine learning, operations research, and data engineering programming using Python or R and relevant higher-level libraries or similar tools.
  • Strong familiarity with simulation and forecasting models used by business stakeholders, and experience communicating results and improving models based on end-user feedback.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience communicating and building consensus on highly technical or sensitive information with technology and business teams.
  • Experience iterating through UI/UX patterns, data visualization, and front-end interactions while balancing conflicting stakeholder preferences.
  • Formal application of empirical science principles, including statistical modeling, design of experiments, and hypothesis formulation and testing.
  • Advanced degree in public health, epidemiology, public health economics, operations research, or a similar discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement complex end-to-end data pipelines, features, and forecasting models to study health systems utilization and clinical research.
  • Integrate real-world data sources to build epidemiological and disease forecasting models supporting clinical trial operations decisions.
  • Apply operations research methods—including constraints-based optimization, linear and nonlinear programming, simulation, and network modeling—to understand participant, investigator, and sponsor behaviors that affect risk, benefit, and uncertainty in clinical trial outcomes.
  • Generate evidence and communicate results, including through conferences and peer-reviewed publications, to audiences in relevant therapeutic areas, sensor science, machine learning, and operations research.
  • Support the integration, design, and development of novel measures, models, and metrics for assessing model validity and performance across the model lifecycle.
