About The Position

The Primary Met QA Engineering Manager is responsible for establishing and sustaining process metrics that improve solidified product quality, reduce defects and yield loss, and support reliable downstream performance. Partner with operations, maintenance, and engineering to investigate defects, optimize practices and equipment, and implement data-driven improvements. Serve as the area authority for solidification quality by challenging outdated practices, reinforcing disciplined execution, and communicating risks, priorities, and results across all levels of the organization. This technical support is required both during normal and off-shift working hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science, or related field with 12 years or more of experience in engineering, technical, or operations management.
  • Statistical training and knowledge
  • Cost Analysis
  • Problem Solving training (ie: Cause Maps, Lean, 5 Whys)
  • Modeling software knowledge
  • Basic computer skills including database query knowledge
  • Concise and professional communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science, or related field with 10 years or more of experience in engineering, technical, or operations management.
  • Experience leading or managing teams within the manufacturing sector

Responsibilities

  • Manage, mentor, and develop Primary Quality Professionals.
  • Ensure full-time coverage of on shift quality support during Steel Making and Steel Processing operations.
  • Monitor and analyze process conditions, operating data, quality results, and defect trends to identify risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Establish, document, and maintain operating standards, process metrics, and best practices for consistent and stable solidification product quality.
  • Lead investigations into quality failures, solidification defects, and process variation; complete root cause analysis and implement sustainable corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support and champion defect reduction through the effective use of QMOS tools, driving systematic identification, investigation, and resolution of quality issues.
  • Partner with supervisors and hourly employees to ensure safe, consistent execution of operating practices across shifts and crews.
  • Collaborate with downstream operations, quality and technical teams to connect solidification conditions with product performance and customer requirements.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate process trials. Define success criteria, review results, document learning, and standardize proven improvements.
  • Develop and deliver training on solidification fundamentals, defect prevention, process controls, new practices, and equipment changes.
  • Communicate quality risks, operating expectations, investigation findings, action plans, and performance results clearly to hourly employees, supervisors, maintenance, engineering, and leadership.
  • Monitor and analyze important hand-off points of product between different departments.
