About The Position

The Primary Care Sports Physician provides comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and non-surgical management of musculoskeletal conditions for patients of Nebraska Orthopaedic Center (NOC). This position expands NOC's ability to care for patients across the full spectrum of musculoskeletal health from injury and pain management to prevention, wellness, mobility, and long-term function. The physician will collaborate with NOC surgeons, advanced practice providers, physical and occupational therapists, athletic trainers, and other members of the care team to provide coordinated, patient-centered care.

Requirements

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
Completion of an accredited residency program appropriate to the physician's area of practice.
Completion of ACGME accredited Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship or related field.
Board certified or board eligible in the physician's applicable specialty.
Have obtained CAQ-SM (Certificate of Additional Qualification in Sports Medicine) or are CAQ-SM eligible.
Experienced in concussion evaluation and return-to-play protocols.
Current or eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Nebraska.
Current DEA registration, if applicable to the responsibilities of the position.
Eligible for credentialing and privileges at NOC and applicable affiliated facilities.
Current BLS certification or ability to obtain certification as required by NOC.
Demonstrated knowledge and interest in musculoskeletal medicine and non-operative patient care.
Experience treating active adults, athletes, older adults, and patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
Experience and interest in serving as a physician leader in advancing wellness, injury prevention, mobility, or healthy-aging programs.
Experience working within a collaborative orthopedic or multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

Provide advanced non-surgical musculoskeletal diagnostic and treatment services, including ultrasound-guided diagnostic evaluations and injections (corticosteroid, PRP, and hyaluronic acid), and other appropriate non-operative interventions, as well as bracing and orthotic prescriptions.
Evaluate and diagnose acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions involving the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Develop individualized, evidence-based non-operative treatment plans based on each patient's diagnosis, functional needs, lifestyle, and goals.
Manage appropriate orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions conservatively with the goal of improving mobility, function, and quality of life.
Serve as a point of contact for non-established patients with non-operative MSK conditions/injuries, helping to diagnose and initiate treatment.
Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans as appropriate.
Recognize conditions requiring surgical evaluation and facilitate timely referral to the appropriate NOC orthopedic surgeon.
Help patients improve strength, mobility, flexibility, balance, and overall physical function.
Identify musculoskeletal risk factors that may contribute to injury, declining mobility, or loss of function.
Provide clinical leadership and supervision for the NOC MSK Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team.
Develop and oversee individualized rehabilitation and exercise programs in collaboration with NOC Therapy, including functional return-to-activity and return-to-play guidance, biomechanical assessment, and injury prevention strategies to support safe recovery, optimize performance, and reduce the risk of reinjury.
Collaborate closely with NOC orthopedic surgeons to ensure patients are directed to the appropriate level of care.
Coordinate with NOC Therapy, APPs, athletic trainers, and other clinical team members to provide patient care.
Coordinate with athletic trainers on baseline testing, neurocognitive assessments, and symptom management.
Oversee NOC Ortho Quick Care in collaboration with the Clinical Manager, including development and oversight of clinical protocols and periodic Quick Care coverage to support patient access and increase community awareness.
Lead and support NOC programs focused on long-term musculoskeletal health and wellness, including management of the Bone Health program, guidance for patients with exercise-related medical conditions, safe return to activity following illness, and education related to sports nutrition, hydration, exercise, and performance optimization.
Provide pre-participation and wellness evaluations for athletes and active individuals, including sports physicals, assessment of injury and cardiac risk factors, appropriate ECG interpretation, and education on safe training, recovery, mental wellness, and strategies to support long-term health and athletic performance.
Support NOC’s sports medicine outreach through sideline and event coverage for area high schools, colleges, athletic programs, and community sporting events, working collaboratively with NOC athletic trainers and the sports medicine team to provide on-site medical support and strengthen community partnerships.
Partner with NOC physicians and clinical teams to advance NOC initiatives related to injury preventions, mobility, wellness, and healthy aging.
Maintain timely, accurate, and complete medical documentation in accordance with NOC policies and regulatory requirements.
Follow established clinical protocols, quality standards, and patient safety practices.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical program development as appropriate.
Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all applicable regulatory requirements.
