About The Position

The Corporation of the County of Essex is seeking a Primary Care Paramedic to join the Essex-Windsor EMS team. This part-time position involves performing primary emergency medical care, ensuring the safe transportation of ill or injured persons, operating emergency vehicles, maintaining communication with the Central Ambulance Communications Centre, and liaising with other agencies. The role also includes maintaining ambulances, equipment, and stations, completing documentation, participating in mandatory training, and functioning in a First Response capacity when required. Essex-Windsor EMS is dedicated to providing high-quality pre-hospital emergency care to the citizens of the County of Essex, the City of Windsor, and the Township of Pelee, fostering fiscally responsible quality care through strong relationships with other emergency services, public education, continuous quality improvement, and employee support.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved College Paramedic Program OR Paramedic Students expected to graduate in 2026.
  • Valid CPR certification - certified within the last 12 months.
  • A-EMCA certificate or pending (successful pending applicants are permitted to work for an ambulance service for up to 210 days without the AEMCA. Candidates who are pending must be able to demonstrate successful application for a future AEMCA date).
  • Valid Class F Driver’s Licence, compliant with the specified employment requirements related to driver's licence under the Ambulance Act; good driving record and good driving skills.
  • Able to identify patient treatment needs and provide appropriate care.
  • Physically capable of lifting and carrying heavy patients and equipment.
  • Valid documentation and suitability for allowable entry into the US for cross-border transfers.
  • Available to comply with availability requirements and work all shifts, all stations (including remote overnight assignments at Pelee Island), as scheduled or called in, in a 24-hour per day, seven-day per week operation (days, nights, weekends, and holidays).
  • Good interpersonal skills; able to communicate effectively; to work closely with the entire healthcare team.
  • Good teamwork skills, and ability to work closely with a partner for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work in stressful situations and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations; critical thinker.
  • Good data entry skills.
  • Successful completion of the paramedic physical fitness assessment.
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search.
  • Satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.
  • Compliance with current communicable disease standards, as outlined by MOHLTC.
  • Successful completion of Base Hospital Symptom Relief and Defibrillation certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform primary emergency medical care and controlled acts under the direction of the Base Hospital Medical Director.
  • Ensure the safe and timely land transportation of ill or injured persons, including cross-border transfers.
  • Operate emergency vehicles safely in all weather conditions.
  • Maintain contact with and comply with direction from the Central Ambulance Communications Centre.
  • Liaise with other agencies to collect and provide relevant information.
  • Maintain ambulances, equipment, supplies, controlled drugs and stations in a state of readiness.
  • Complete required documentation.
  • Participate in mandatory training.
  • Function in a First Response capacity when and if required.
