About The Position

JFCS prevention services are designed to decrease adolescent risk factors while increasing protective factors to buffer against the risks present in their communities. The Prevention Specialist utilizes research and evidence-based prevention curricula to facilitate group and whole class sessions with children and adolescents in the Philadelphia Public Schools. Specialists are responsible for direct education and support for students enrolled in each session. The Prevention Specialist is assigned to specific schools to provide in-person instruction as required with our contract with the Office of The Single County Authority.

Requirements

Demonstrate an ability to facilitate whole class instruction or small groups with children, adolescents, and adults
Knowledge of child and adolescent development.
Knowledge of group dynamics
Knowledge of trauma-informed care.
Proficient use of technology (smart phone/tablet/laptop) and experience using MS Office applications is required.
Ability to exercise independent judgment in an area of activity for which procedures cannot be standardized.
Ability to meet and interact respectfully, patiently, and courteously with a variety of types of clients and families from various racial, ethnic, and religious groups.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to establish and maintain positive working professional relationships with staff, school personnel, and other professionals.

Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Education, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience working directly with children and adolescents
All prospective employees must pass a criminal background check, child abuse check, and FBI fingerprint clearance.
Due to the movement of presentation materials from office to work locations, the employee must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and be able to move materials from their vehicle into the work location.
Must own a car, have, and maintain, a safe driving record on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state in which the employee is licensed to drive. Must provide a valid driver's license, maintain proof of automobile liability insurance, and maintain coverage.

Nice To Haves

One year working with youth in an urban setting highly preferred
Experience working with youth in a school setting preferred
Knowledge and experience utilizing evidence-based prevention curriculum preferred

Responsibilities

Meet with school personnel to establish prevention programs and establish a schedule of service in assigned schools.
Fulfill required monthly direct service hours per Education and Outreach (EOS) policies by providing up to 5 groups daily in assigned elementary, middle, and/or high school settings
Provide program orientation to students, school staff and parents
Prepare lessons utilizing EOS approved research and evidence-based curriculum
Be available during report card conference days and back to school events to provide programmatic information and resources to families
Consult with individual students to assess need for further intervention
Complete and submit student referral form to school counselor, supervisor and other appropriate school personnel as warranted
Provide ongoing consultation for school personnel regarding the progress of services provided
Contribute to the development and implementation of special projects
May be required to facilitate workshops with school personnel, parents, and other professionals
Participate in staff meetings and supervisory sessions
Enter data and submit all required paperwork within the time frame specified in EOS policies and procedures
Display initiative in program development and motivation for advancing skills through participation in training workshops
Maintain daily communication by checking e-mail and phone messages at least once per day
Adhere to EOS procedure for recording daily attendance
Maintain awareness of JFCS vision, mission, and program components
Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as requested
Adheres to OAS training requirements
