About The Position

The Materials and Tests Unit (M&T) is responsible for establishing acceptance criteria for materials and manufactured products to be incorporated into the North Carolina highway system and ensuring that these materials and manufactured products meet these criteria and will function as intended. This position resides within the Manufactured Product’s Section of the Materials and Tests Unit. This position serves as one of the Department’s Prestressed Concrete Engineering Technicians. The position is responsible for sampling, testing, and inspecting prestressed and other manufactured concrete products. The Precast Engineering Technician visits production and project sites to inspect concrete products visually and dimensionally and to ensure that the materials used are prepared in compliance with prescribed standards and specifications. Duties include inspection of the forms and molds, various procedures prior and during casting, monitoring the quality and placement of the concrete, inspection of the finished product, and other required inspection duties. The Prestressed Engineering Technician will be responsible for preparing and distributing detailed records of inspections including: daily diaries, reports on samples taken, and field inspection reports. Work will be on NCDOT projects and at production facilities throughout North Carolina and in neighboring states.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and traverse uneven and rough terrain.
  • Ability to make fine visual distinctions in measurements and test results.
  • Ability to safely navigate hazardous work situations at facilities and project sites while following established in-house safety procedures.
  • Must be in good physical condition and have the ability to perform field work.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Concrete Field Technician and PCI Level I certifications are preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of HiCAMS and Vendor programs used by the Department.
  • Experience inspecting the material properties of concrete and steel materials used in prestressed and precast concrete product manufacturing.
  • Experience reviewing non-conformance reports and ensuring approved repair procedures are implemented by the producer so as not to delay project delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess proficiency of technicians to ensure compliance with established testing and inspection methods in both classroom and field inspection environments.
  • Customer service experience with various internal and external customers related to inspection, sampling, testing, and certification.
