About The Position

The Printing Press Operator is responsible for the set-up and operation of their designated press, ensuring the accuracy and quality of the product being produced. The operator is also responsible for training new employees. This role requires adherence to all safety procedures, including PPE, ergonomics, and chemical hazard awareness, to protect the health and safety of all employees. The operator must read and understand job jackets/orders, establish and follow quality checking procedures, and effectively communicate with the supervisor, oncoming shift, and management. Responsibilities also include cleanup and other procedures related to job completion, assisting in the set-up of the next job (pulling ink, cleaning the press), and maintaining a clean press area. The operator must also make proper computer entries, follow the chain of command, and be at their workstation on time. Compliance with all regulatory, facility food safety, and quality policies and procedures, including product safety (GMPs), is mandatory.

  • Ability to distinguish subtle shades of colors accurately in order to match samples and color designations in orders.
  • Ability to lift 50 – 75 pound air shafts without the assistance of any hoist and must be able to manipulate 100 – 300 pounds with the assistance of mechanical devices.
  • Ability to read a ruler and have other general math skills in order to measure roll diameters, roll widths, package sizes, etc.
  • Directionality to distinguish right and left sides of machinery and to follow operating instructions from other employees and from written instructions.
  • Agility (bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, etc.) in order to climb up on press, move cylinders, adjust equipment and avoid dangerous moving machinery.
  • Excellent reflexes for quick response time on moving machinery.
  • Ability to react to rapidly moving parts in order to avoid serious injury.
  • Must be completely alert at all times to operate machinery in a proper manner.
  • Good sense of smell to distinguish odors from materials and smell smoke (in case of fire).
  • Good hearing to follow directions and coordinate procedures with fellow employees and to hear warning signals.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow detailed instructions without constant supervision.
  • Ability to communicate operating problems to supervisor.
  • Spatial skills, which can be applied to judge dimensions necessary for operation of machinery.
  • Mechanical ability to learn how the press operates, including anilox rollers, cylinders, tension controls, safety mechanism, etc.
  • Ability to logically deduce (reason) the source of the problem on the press, which prevents commercially acceptable printing, propose a solution to that problem and carry out that solution.
  • Ability to carry out press procedures in an initial sequence and repeat that procedure on future orders in a similar manner or with alterations.
  • Eyesight (whether correct or not) which allows pressman to distinguish hairlines, registration, mounting accuracy and ink lay-down to print suitable quality.
  • Ability to record information electronically as required by accounting.
  • Maturity and disposition to operate press safely at all times.
  • Understanding and ability to implement safety emergency procedures.
  • Follow standard safety procedures such as engaging the E-stop prior to placing any body part in the machine, including normal processes such as die/cylinder changes.
  • Physical strength to stand for lengthy periods of time.
  • Ability to interact with and follow instructions from quality control or management to maintain specified quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accuracy and quality of product being produced.
  • Train new employees.
  • Follow all required safety procedures such as PPE’s, ergonomics, chemical hazards, etc.
  • Read and understand job jackets/orders.
  • Establish and follow quality checking procedures in the pressroom.
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor, oncoming shift, and management.
  • Perform cleanup and any other procedures related to completion of jobs.
  • Assist in the set up of the next job including pulling ink and cleaning of the press.
  • Keep press area cleaned, including cleaning the press area at the end of the shift.
  • Stay busy when the press is down.
  • Make proper computer entries.
  • Follow the chain of command from supervisor to department manager to plant manager, etc.
  • Be at workstation within 3 minutes of reporting time.
  • Comply with all regulatory, facility food safety, and quality policies and procedures including product safety (GMPs) policies and procedures.
  • Examine plate quality to only accept plates suitable to print the job.
  • Perform meticulous work under production demand.
