About The Position

The Printing Press Operator is responsible for the set-up and operation of their designated press, ensuring the accuracy and quality of the product being produced. The operator is also responsible for training new employees. This role requires adherence to all safety procedures, including the use of PPE, understanding chemical hazards, and performing the job in a manner that protects the health and safety of all employees. Key duties include reading and understanding job jackets/orders, establishing and following quality checking procedures, effectively communicating with supervisors and colleagues, performing cleanup and other job completion procedures, and assisting in the setup of the next job by pulling ink, cleaning the press, and maintaining a clean work area. The operator must also stay productive when the press is down, make proper computer entries, follow the chain of command, and be at their workstation promptly. Compliance with all regulatory, facility food safety, and quality policies and procedures, including product safety (GMPs), is mandatory.

  • Ability to read a ruler and have other general math skills.
  • Directionality to distinguish right and left sides of machinery and follow operating instructions.
  • Agility (bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, etc.) to climb up on press, move cylinders, adjust equipment and avoid dangerous moving machinery.
  • Excellent reflexes for quick response time on moving machinery.
  • Ability to react to rapidly moving parts to avoid injury.
  • Complete alertness at all times to operate machinery properly.
  • Good sense of smell to distinguish odors from materials and smell smoke.
  • Good hearing to follow directions and coordinate procedures with fellow employees and to hear warning signals.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow detailed instructions without constant supervision.
  • Ability to communicate operating problems to supervisor.
  • Spatial skills to judge dimensions necessary for operation of machinery.
  • Mechanical ability to learn how the press operates (anilox rollers, cylinders, tension controls, safety mechanism, etc.).
  • Ability to logically deduce the source of a printing problem, propose a solution, and carry it out.
  • Ability to carry out press procedures in an initial sequence and repeat or alter them for future orders.
  • Eyesight (correct or not) to distinguish hairlines, registration, mounting accuracy and ink lay-down for suitable print quality.
  • Ability to record information electronically.
  • Maturity and disposition to operate press safely at all times.
  • Understanding and ability to implement safety emergency procedures.
  • Ability to follow standard safety procedures (e.g., engaging E-stop).
  • Physical strength to stand for lengthy periods of time.
  • Ability to interact with and follow instructions from quality control or management.
  • Ability to examine plate quality.
  • Ability to do meticulous work under production demand.

Responsibilities

  • Set-up and operation of designated press.
  • Ensuring accuracy and quality of product being produced.

  • Reading and understanding job jackets/orders.
  • Establishing and following quality checking procedures in the pressroom.
  • Effective communication with supervisor, oncoming shift, and management.
  • Cleanup and other procedures related to completion of jobs.
  • Assisting in the setup of the next job (pulling ink, cleaning press).
  • Keeping press area cleaned, including cleaning at the end of the shift.
  • Staying busy when the press is down.
  • Making proper computer entries.
  • Following the chain of command.
  • Being at workstation within 3 minutes of reporting time.
  • Compliance with all regulatory, facility food safety, and quality policies and procedures, including product safety (GMPs).
