About The Position

The City of Ventura is seeking a Preservation Services Technician to support the Fire Department. Under general supervision, this role assists with the enforcement of applicable laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances, primarily in the areas of fire prevention and code compliance. Responsibilities include issuing permits related to fire prevention activities, supporting the investigation of citizen complaints, and helping the public achieve compliance with applicable codes. The position also performs a range of clerical, technical support, and research tasks tied to enforcement operations. This is a non sworn, non safety position.

Requirements

  • Completion of a background investigation, which includes a non-sworn personnel livescan fingerprinting requirement.
  • A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of public customer service experience, including basic clerical office experience is required.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional course work or training in fire prevention, hazardous materials inspection, or related code enforcement is highly desirable.
  • For Preservation Services Technician II: 18 months of experience comparable to that of a Preservation Services Technician I with the City of Ventura is required.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and responds to citizen complaints by telephone, in writing, and at the public counter regarding enforcement of applicable laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances
  • Issues a variety of permits, applying limited interpretation of relevant codes, ordinances, and policies to determine appropriate fees
  • Prepares and tracks permit renewals, including hazardous materials and R 1 occupancies, and gathers required information for applications, amendments, and renewals
  • Monitors and follows up on delinquent permits to ensure compliance
  • Coordinates the weed abatement program, including notifying property owners, conducting inspections, supporting enforcement activities, and overseeing contractor work
  • Works to obtain code compliance through direct contact and written notices in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Assists with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data related to fire, hazardous materials, and code enforcement inspections
  • Maintains and updates computer databases that support ongoing programs and operations
  • Coordinates activities with other City staff as needed
  • Compiles and tracks statistical data related to permits and inspections and prepares information for reporting in various formats
  • Prepares, updates, and maintains reports, files, and documentation related to fire prevention, hazardous materials, and code enforcement
  • Assists with community outreach, public information, and promotional efforts related to assigned programs
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
