About The Position

A Preschool Substitute Teacher supports the lead teacher in creating a nurturing and engaging learning environment for preschool-aged children. This role includes assisting with classroom activities, following lesson plans and daily routines, and supporting children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development through hands-on, play-based learning. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic, flexible, and dedicated to creating a positive experience for young learners.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of child development and educational best practices
  • Ability to create age-appropriate lesson plans and learning activities
  • Patience, creativity, and a passion for working with children
  • Experience working with children 2-5
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with children, parents, and staff
  • Ability to solve problems as they arise
  • Must be dependable, energetic, and have a positive attitude
  • Ability to enforce Park District rules and safety practices
  • Certified in CPR/AED and First Aid is required

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in early childhood education or related field

Responsibilities

  • Follow established lesson plans, classroom routines, and activities for preschool-aged children.
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for all students.
  • Supervise children during indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Support children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development through play-based and structured activities.
  • Assist with daily routines, including arrival, dismissal, meals, restroom breaks, transitions, and cleanup.
  • Promote positive behavior and assist with conflict resolution among students.
  • Communicate important information regarding children’s needs or incidents to the Lead Instructor or Recreation Supervisor.
  • Maintain classroom cleanliness and follow all health and safety procedures.
  • Assist with creative arts, music, movement, and other classroom activities as directed.
  • Work collaboratively with classroom staff to support a positive and engaging learning experience.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
