About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Preschool Aide works with teachers and supervisors to maintain a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families.

Requirements

  • Qualified and registered through DHS Hawaii Early Childhood Registry according to the state child care licensing rules.
  • High school vocational child care training course; or, Orientation training course in the center.
  • 16 years of age or older.
  • Volunteers shall participate in an orientation to the program; or be a participant in a high school program which includes child care training; and meet the requirements of regular staff members to be counted in the staff-child ratio.
  • Temporary hires shall meet qualifications of positions for which hired.
  • Substitutes for aides shall meet the qualifications of an aide.
  • Aides in training to become Assistant Teachers or Teachers must be 18 years of age or older AND be enrolled in CDA program or comparable program AND meet completion deadline set by Preschool Director AND have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required.
  • Child Abuse Prevention training (Praesidium) prior to the start of first shift.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Fulfillment of state-specific hiring standards and completion of YMCA program-specific training.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Daily access to personal vehicle required.
  • Must successfully complete a comprehensive background screening, including criminal and sex offender checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
