About The Position

The Los Angeles LGBT Center Culinary Arts Program uses food to unite its intergenerational campus and help members start careers in the hospitality industry. This program is a certified social enterprise that trains 100 students annually, produces over 450 daily meals for program members, operates the Liberation Coffee House café, and provides event catering services. The Prep Cook/Dishwasher works closely with the Executive Sous Chef to ensure kitchen cleanliness and timely food production, supporting meal production and event catering while serving as a professional role model to students. Effective communication skills are essential for the successful daily operation of the kitchen.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people.
  • A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
  • Must have Food Handler’s Permit or be able to pass the exam within 30 days after the date of hire.
  • Minimum 6 months of foodservice experience.
  • Must be sensitive to the issues of young gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and an ability to work with a sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
  • Must be up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations as a condition of employment, subject to applicable federal, state and local laws.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal culinary training and/or nutritional training.
  • Background working in a high-volume, fast-paced institutional facility, restaurant or hotel.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the culinary team to execute food production, including setting up and breaking down workstations, following recipes, preparing ingredients, and executing proper cooking techniques.
  • Ensure the on-time production and service of meals, catering events, and coffee shop/café food.
  • Work with management to complete food inventories and ordering.
  • Work with management to support students and follow the culinary curriculum.
  • Maintain a learning environment that encourages students to ask questions and show respect for the teacher and fellow classmates.
  • Maintain the kitchen in compliance with State health and safety standards, including the use of proper cooking logs and kitchen maintenance cleaning supplies.
  • Ensure all health and safety codes are under compliance and implement procedures to safeguard proper compliance (this includes cleaning logs, temperature logs, and corrective action documentation).
  • Perform stewarding and dishwashing tasks to maintain kitchen cleanliness, including general surfaces, drain maintenance, cooking equipment, storage/cooler areas, and dishwashing equipment.
  • Participate in staff meetings, planning meetings, and other meetings as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
