Genetic counselors help patients understand and adapt to the medical, psychological, and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. This includes interpreting family and medical histories to assess the chance of disease occurrence or recurrence, education about genetic concepts (inheritance, testing, management, prevention, resources, and research), and counseling to promote informed choices and adaptation to genetic disease. The primary focus of a genetic counselor is to provide genetic counseling to patients within their specialty. The genetic counselor will also be responsible for assisting with provider education and other clinic support. They will function within a clinical specialty team of genetic counselors and genetic counseling assistants, as well as have working relationships with the non-genetics clinical staff in their area. As more experience is gained, the genetic counselor will have opportunities to take on additional projects and seek professional development in the field.
