About The Position

The Premium Audit Specialist conducts virtual audits of workers' compensation insurance policies for Markel policyholders across the country. Through phone interviews and detailed document reviews, the Specialist analyzes payroll records, employee job duties, business operations, subcontractor exposures, and organizational structures to ensure workers' compensation classifications and premiums accurately reflect the insured's risk. This role combines investigative analysis, customer interaction, and regulatory expertise. Premium Audit Specialists work directly with business owners, financial contacts, and insurance professionals to understand how companies operate and to ensure compliance with workers' compensation rating rules established by organizations such as the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB), and Pennsylvania Compensation Rating Bureau (PCRB). Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience in workers' compensation, premium auditing, insurance operations, underwriting support, accounting, finance, payroll administration, or business analysis preferred.
  • Strong analytical, investigative, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to interpret financial, payroll, and operational information.
  • Effective interviewing and information-gathering skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to independently prioritize workload and manage multiple assignments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Interest in utilizing technology, automation, data analytics, and AI tools to drive operational improvements.
  • US Work Authorization required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct virtual audits of workers' compensation insurance policies through phone interviews with policyholders.
  • Investigate and analyze payroll records, employee job duties, business operations, subcontractor exposures, and legal entity structures to determine proper workers' compensation classifications and exposures.
  • Review supporting financial and operational documentation to validate payroll and exposure information.
  • Apply NCCI, WCIRB, PCRB, and applicable state workers' compensation rules to ensure accurate audit results.
  • Prepare and process audit reports accurately and within established service standards.
  • Review audits completed by third-party vendors to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in reviewing expired workers' compensation policies to determine audit selection requirements.
  • Meet established productivity, quality, accuracy, and turnaround expectations.
  • Collaborate with underwriters, customer service representatives, agents, and policyholders to resolve audit questions and discrepancies.
  • Utilize technology, analytics, and digital tools to improve workflow efficiency and audit quality.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance operational effectiveness through automation, continuous improvement initiatives, and AI-assisted solutions.
  • Contribute to a culture of innovation, accuracy, and exceptional customer service.
